A Resolution All Golfers Should Make

2008 is just a few hours away, and as always, I've got a whole gaggle of resolutions lined up. Right now they're mulling about at the starting tee waiting anxiously for the new round year to begin. They're the typical resolutions; the ones meant to result in improvements to my fitness, finances, and family relationships.

However, unlike many golfer friends of mine, I'm not making a single resolution about practicing more... or lowering my handicap... or three putting less... or or curing my slice. Don't get me wrong, I fully intend to do all those things, I'm just not making resolutions about them. That's because, a while back, I resolved (yes, that was a resolution of sorts) to keep golf fun. Fun, as in pure pleasure with no pressure. And I've stuck to that, all the while slowly improving my game, without benchmarks or fixed goals or...resolutions. I realize that not everyone can enjoy the game in this loose, relaxed way, but it works for me. I'm enjoying golf thoroughly.

There is however, one golf resolution I am making for 2008; I'm resolving to be a better evangelist for our sport.

And I really wish more golfers, recreational and professional, would follow suit. It should be ultra easy, right? After all, we love this game; we play it, we watch it, we read about...some of us even write about it. We should be able to engage all kinds of new players. But the fact is, growth is flat, and given the current economic forecast, 2008 will present some new and formidable challenges.

New players are vital if we want to continue to have reasonably priced, accessible courses to play on, and innovative, exciting golf products to choose from. Right now there are affordable public courses in most areas, and there are lots of smaller manufacturers coming out with awesome products. But they can't survive without customers. And once they're gone it'll be that much harder to get new players interested. Kind of a Catch-22 in the making. We don't want that. The moment is decidedly upon us, and hence my 2008 resolution. So how am I going to implement it...and how can other passionate golfers get involved? Well, I've got listed a few initiatives we can all consider:

1. Promote golf to new audience: Join a First Tee program. They operate all across the US and internationally. Contribute, participate or partner with them to bring golf to young people of all backgrounds.

2. Get the girls involved: I've got to admit, when I play it's usually with guys. Because...they're there. Yes, it's that simple; they're there and they're ready to play at a moment's notice. Women, generally, are not. It often requires more planning to play with a woman, but I'm not going to let that stop me in 2008, because female golfers are fun to play with and the fact is, they represent the single biggest opportunity for rounds and revenue growth for the industry. We've got to get them out there. EWGA is a great organization that mentors beginning female golfers. I'm a member and encourage other Golf Girls to check it out.

3. Make the newbies feel welcome: I know this will be counter intuitive to the curmudgeons who scowl at anyone who hits less than 250 off the first tee. But that's their problem. The rest of us want the beginners to come back. Again and again and again. We want them to continue playing till they're no longer beginners. That way we're building a future crop of customers for the golf businesses we like so much. It's not that difficult to dispense words of welcome and encouragement to tentative newcomers.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year! Thank you for reading and watching and writing and commenting. See you in 2008.

18th Couture - Remarkable Golf Apparel

No doubt about it, ladies golf attire has come a long way in the past few years. Boxy shorts, boy's polos, long baggy skirts... it's hard to believe they were once the uniform of women golfers; both pro and recreational.

Nowadays though, more and more women are saying "no way" to that look. And, lucky for us, a number of ambitious Golf Gals are actually taking matters into their own hands and creating some really amazing apparel lines. One that I just LOVE, is 18th couture. It's new. In fact it's set to debut at the upcoming 2008 PGA Merchandise Show. But you can get a sneak peek at the line by visiting their elegant website.

The concept behind this line is unique. It's all about flexibility and the easy transition from office attire to golf attire. Oh, and their signature piece is an awesome little belted bag for all your golfing essentials; tees, balls, scorecards and of course, lipstick.

Yes, I have a feeling I'll be writing more about 18th couture in the future.

Golf Glamor Girl Jeanne Carmen Dies at 77

She was an American original. A 20th century country girl who left small town Arkansas for a glittery life on the road. A road that lead from Broadway to Vegas, to Hollywood, with many interesting stops in between. Jeanne was a dancer, a pinup girl and a B movie star. She also worked as a profesional trick shot golfer and later, a golf hustler.

Jeanne Carmen died
of lymphoma at her home in Orange County, CA. Check out the these two videos for highlights of her amazing story.

Nick Lachey - From Choir Boy to Golf Guy

Nick Lachey has lots going on these days.

Did you see Clash of the Choirs? It was an American Idoly type show, but without Simon Cowl, and with choirs instead of solo artists. The show was on four nights and it was sappy and schmaltzy and sentimental, but the choral singing was pretty wonderful. Nick led a team...and tonight his team won.

Well, turns out that was just one of his current projects. Earlier today he announced plans for the first Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic. He's putting it on with golf cart crashing Nascar Champion, Jimmie Johnson. Yes, that Jimmie Johnson. The event will be held in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Feb. 2, 2008 and proceeds from the golf classic, an online auction and a party will go to several different charities, including The Nick Lachey Foundation and The Jimmie Johnson Foundation, both of which help out families and children.

I've got to say, Nick Lachey's come a long way. Just a couple of years ago he was an average newlywed. Well maybe not so average.

Sophie Sandolo Speaks Out

For 2008, sublime French-Italian Golf Girl, Sophie Sandolo, has produced calendar with a cause.

Oh, don't worry, the LET golfer hasn't abandoned her provocative poses... and her costumes are as minimalist as ever, but this year she's got a message. Like many others, Sophie wants to see golf included in the Olympic Games. So much so that she's devoted her entire 2008 calendar to the issue.

In her own very sexy, Sophiesque way, she's dedicated each month to a different Olympic Sport. You can order Sophie's calendar at her website. You can also get an idea of what this uninhibited Golf Girl has in store for 2008. If her equestrian and soccer photos are any indication of the rest of the months, I can hardly wait to see archery and poll vaulting.

The Perfect Day Golf Gift

If you're like me, you're totally still shopping for the holidays... and you probably will be right down to the wire. To that end, let me make a quick gift suggestion for the fun loving golf guy in your life.

It's a unique boxed set called the Perfect Day Club Survival Kit and it's the invention of a self confessed golf nut who also has a passion for the perfect martini. The set comes in a cute gift box featuring the perfect day mascot, Joy (she's the little gal in the martini glass). It includes martini glasses, golf balls and other fun Perfect Day paraphernalia, all with the Joy logo. It even includes some very special massage oils. Well yeah, we've all longed for a little massage after a round or two of golf, right? Anyway, it's a light hearted and whimsical and it's definitely made for the guy who associates golf with laughter and fun... rather than seriousness and frustration.

Another great thing about this gift is that for every Survival Kit purchased, $1.00 will be donated to The First Tee and $1.00 will be donated to Wounded Warriors, two awesome organizations.

Find out more about the Perfect Day Club and the Survival Kit at the Perfect Day website. Oh BTW, note to golf girls: if you give this gift to the guy in your life...he may just want to give you ... a really nice massage. Now that's a gift that keeps on giving.

Top Left Golf, The Blog

Remember about a month ago I posted about Top Left Golf...the awesome new golf magazine I'll be writing a regular column for? OK, not only do these guys put out a unique and amazing magazine, they're now blogging as well ...and you can be sure they'll be finding some cool and unusual golf stories. Beer and style stories too. AND don't be surprised to find me doing an occasional guest post there. After all, I'm a bit of a beer aficionado myself.

So, check out the new blog...and be sure to look for my "Cut Shot Chronicles" in Top Left Magazine.

Natalie Gulbis Gets Around

Some golfers have been taking it easy, and resting up for the past couple of weeks. Not Natalie. She's been on the move since the end of November. She's been all over the world, meeting the President and touring the White House, spending a couple of whirlwind days in NYC, promoting golf events in Singapore... then there was the Lexus in Australia...and now she's in Dubai. Pretty amazing. But I'll let her tell you about it. Yes, she' been blogging too.

GGTV Episode VI - The Holiday Show

The holidays are here! In this special episode I show you a fun "golfy" present I found for Nick. We also head to Richter Park for a round of winter golf... and Nick reluctantly models some really nice, really inexpensive sweaters for the golf guy. Season's Greetings!

Putting the Brakes on Runaway Golf Carts

I've got to admit it, most of my golf is played with a cart. Don't get me wrong, I love walking, and when I play alone in the summer twilight, that's how I do it every time. However, the three guys who generally fill out my foursome are unconditional cart riders. They've got their cigars and drinks and a panoply of golf gadgets...and more than that, they just like to ride, it's part of their golf culture. So, not one to argue, I end up riding along, and enjoying a drink or two while I'm at it.

Now as anyone who regularly gets in and out of golf cart knows, the parking brakes on most buggies are weird. So much so that runaway carts are quite common, I recently saw one end up in a ravine, after a valiant pursuit by it's stunned driver, and last year I witnessed what could have been a serious accident when the Vice President of our Ladies League, stepped on her parking break, stepped out of her cart... then was pulled half way back in and dragged to within feet of a foreboding water hazard. In this case, the only thing hurt was her pride, but you get the picture.

Fortunately though, someone's been paying attention to this problem, and now there's a new breed of golf carts with "fail-safe" automatic parking brakes. Golfdom's insider David Fabrotta wrote all about it today. It's E-Z-GO's new RXV and in addition to the high tech brake it's got lots of other cool features. Hopefully it'll be part of your club's next fleet upgrade. I know I'm hoping it comes to my course soon. Those water hazards are cold this time of year.

Golf Girls in Bangalore

A stellar cast of Golf Girls convened today at the beautiful Eagleton Resort in Bangalore, for the EMAAR-MGF Ladies Masters, India's first ever LET event. Superstar Golf Girl, Laura Davies, won the challenge match on Monday, with India's adorable Sharmila Nicollet.

In India, women's golf has taken off in a huge way... right along with the men's game... and a number of world-class events in 2008 will further enhance the popularity of the game. The India Golf Union and the Women’s Golf Association of India are working with a number of partners, including "Golf in Dubai", CNN and Omega, to bring the world's best (and the world's best known) players to India and the Middle East. Their plan looks to be working. Next week Ms. Davies will be joined by the likes of Annika Sorenstam, Natalie Gulbis and Suzanne Pettersen at The Dubai Ladie's Masters.

Monday

Rudy and Judi and Golf

OK, Let me be clear: this is a blog about golf. Golf in the fun, flirty sense, but golf nonetheless.

I normally don't touch politics; it's much too polarizing and in the end... for me at least... it always seems to come down to the lesser of two evils. And I hate that, so I just don't do it. Generally.

However as the candidates debate and the primaries approach and the Caucus Countdowns... count down, I find myself drawn in. So I did the logical thing considering my passion for golf and the fact that this is, after all, a golf blog; I golf-googled all the leading candidates. (The simple formula is: canditate's name, space, golf). And...I came up with very little.

Oh, I got lots of Cafe Press golf shirts. The Hillary shirts included a "Hot for Hillary", a "Bill Clinton for for First Lady" and an "Anyone but her '08". One Fred Thompson golf shirt had "Fred '08" underneath an image of a large gun. Looked like a 9mm Glock to me. Disconcerting, to say the least. Then there was one that said "Mitt Happens 2008" with an image of a Ken doll on it, Oh, excuse me, that was actually an image of Mitt Romney. "Obama '08"... "McCainiacs for McCain"... "Ron Paul Fo' Shizzel, 2008". If you can imagine it, it's there.

Lot's of Golf shirts, yes, but not much about candidates actually playing golf...or having played it in the past. I found an image of Bill Clinton swinging a driver, in a really cute golf sweater, but Hillary was no where in sight, and none of the other candidates seemed to have much of a connection with the game either. That is till I typed in Rudy Giuliani.

It seems Rudy is quite passionate about golf, as is his wife Judi Judith. The republican front runner apparently discovered golf as a young boy, sneaking into a cloistered Country Club at night with friends to hit balls. Judith Guliani's "Real Golfer" profile in Golf for Women magazine, mentions the couple's honeymoon at the Dave Pelz short-game school in Cordillera, CO and reveals that they've played together in over 20 countries. The photo at the top shows the Guilianis at the US Open at Winged Foot last year. Then there's Rudy's son Andrew, a Duke University sophomore and aspiring professional golfer. He even went so far as to declare that he wouldn't be helping out with his Dad's campaign because he was too busy with golf. (This Dad and son are not known for their warm, fuzzy relationship, BTW}.

Anyway, if anyone has golf news about any of the other candidates I'd love to hear about it. And I'm pretty sure my readers would too. Right?
