Hopes Are Dashed for a Shane-Sergio U.S. Open Pairing

The ax fell yesterday at Tucson Country Club where dashing young golf blogger Shane Bacon came up short in his attempt to qualify for the 2009 U.S. Open.

A couple of weeks ago, when Shane told me he'd decided to go for it, I momentarily imagined a fantasy pairing at Bethpage: Shane Bacon and Sergio Garcia. I even pictured the two strapping young men standing at the signature par 5 fourth, exchanging words of encouragement.

Yes, I know, Shane once called El Niño "a jerk," but it was a fantasy, remember?

Anyway, despite prodigal golf skills, Shane didn't quite make the mark for the upcoming Open, but he's an amazing writer, and he paints a fascinating story about what it's like to catch lightning in a bottle try to qualify for the U.S. Open.

  1. Wanted to leave a comment over on DTCC as well but couldn't...

Great piece and thanks for sharing it further.

Shane's synopsis was really entertaining and enlightening to read.

  2. Don't feel so bad Shane, Tony Romo went down too. But then he's got Jessica Simpson. ;)

  3. It's an Open-and-shut case: The guy had the guts to try.

Hell, I'd be a'scared to caddy at the Open.

  6. Okay, Pat, so your hopes are dashed re that pairing.

But you could still set up a Shane Bacon vs. Hugh Jackman match, no?

Call it the Cannon Classic ... or the Twin Towels.

(No, ladies, "Cannon" refers to the towel maker. Jeez.)

  7. Shane is an excellent writer. Though I don't always agree with him he always presents his opinion in an intelligent, entertaining way.

Keep up the good work Shane, you can go for the Open again next year.

I've translated Mr. Van de Velde's comment into Clingon and emailed it to all my Clingon friends and/or enemies, one of whom informed me of the existence of the planet Clifton, plus Clifton 4, all of which can only add to the now interplanetary Clifton confusion.
