One Awesome Day at the PGA Merchandise Show

Posted by Picasa
As everyone who's been will tell you; the show is gargantuan, and I only had a few hours to spend. It was, none the less, awesome. I spent much of my time in the Fashion Gallery, which probably won't come as a surprise to anyone.

Now I've got to distill it all. I'll have the stylish story for you later this weekend.

A Quick Trip to the PGA Merchandise Show

That's where I am today. At the PGA Merchandise Show in that vast Orlando convention center, full of golf stuff. I'll be back tonight though, and I'll let you know what I saw. Promise.

Much Maligned Monty a Ryder Cup Captain

Colin Montgomerie may not be universally popular, but most agree he the right guy for the Ryder Cup.

This is a short snippet from a video I made a little over a year ago, in the fall of 2007. I had been at the French Open that summer and crossed paths with an angry Monty there. Then there was the speeding ticket Mr. Montgomerie got on ... and tried to un-get. Well at least that was the gossip back then. And one of my favorite superhero golf boggers, The Green Blazer, reported it.

Right now however, it looks like Monty got some revenge.

Goodbye John Updike, Lyrical Lover of Golf

John Updike is probably best known for his for his ribald tales of suburban sexual meanderings in mid-20th century America... award winning literary novels rendered in prose so heartbreakingly lyrical, it takes your breath away.

His characters inhabit wealthy New England towns - suburbs of New York or Boston - and their hedonistic quest for the meaning this superficial society, frequently leads them to adulterous liaisons that end badly.

Many of these flawed and fragile characters play golf, which is not surprising considering the country club world they live in, and also because Mr. Updike himself was so passionate about the game. -This passion led him to write about golf a fairly regular basis.

Updike's "Golf Dreams" is the best golf writing I've ever read. It's a collection of essays, poems and short fiction, originally written for publications such as The New Yorker and Golf Digest. Amazingly they're as soaring, and sparkling and full of breathtaking descriptions, as his novels.

John Updike was a master wordsmith, and whether his words were spilling onto the austere, frost-stiffened December fairways of a Massachusetts golf course, or furtively navigating the cloistered lushness of a leafy Connecticut cul-de-sac, those words often inspired me to ask myself, "How did he make that passage so beautiful?"

John Updike died today of lung cancer at age 76. He will be missed.

Golf Intervention - Help a Lifelong Golfer with Doubts

Dave Begel has been playing golf for 51 years. He loves the game, but is now seriously considering hanging up his golf shoes for good. - All four pairs of them.

Mr. Begel is an award winning journalist who writes for OnMilwaukee.com, a Milwaukee, WI daily magazine and city guide. - What I was doing reading such a publication, is a mystery to me...I have no connection to the city, other than a appreciation for it's malt beverages...but this morning, there I was, and serendipitously, this headline caught my eye:"To Play, or not to Play? That is the Golfer's Question." - Dave Begel was the author.

Dave has obviously established a close, relationship with his readers, and begins the piece by asking them for advice, "The question," he writes "is whether or not I should give up golf".

He provides the background; how he started playing golf as a teenager 51 years ago, fell in love with it, and enjoyed it for decades... making lifelong golfer friends in the process. - Lately however, he's been feeling that the "zing" is gone, and he ponders the reasons. They are the classics, the ones we cite constantly: difficulty, cost and time. ...And Dave's story demonstrates that just as these factors can discourage a beginner, they can also dampen the enthusiasm of a golf aficionado who's been playing for a half a century.

So here's what I want you to do. Drop Dave a line and encourage him to stick with golf. This is your chance to be a golf evangelist. In this absurd economy We're all talking about bringing new players into golf.... But it's just as important to retain the players we've already got.

So if you have a minute, head over to OnMilwaukee.Com and let Dave Begel know he must not give up golf.

...then consider it your good golf deed for the day.

Inspired by Icy Winter Golf and Elegant Black Balls

Here in CT the landscape has been snow covered since mid December.

I've been strengthening my swing in the simulator... and I practice putting on my Persian carpets... but right about now I just want to get outside, in fresh air and natural surroundings, and actually play. And it's only the snow that's stopping me.

The hearty golfers of White Bear Lake, MN, did not let the white stuff stop them this past weekend. They held the second annual Bear'ly Open, an 18 hole tournament affiliated with the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

Proceeds from the event go to local foodbanks, and by the looks of this clip, a good (if somewhat chilly) time was had by all.

While the Bear Lake golfers tend to use bright orange balls... or even tennis balls... in their glacial golf tourney, I'm thinking a fiercely elegant black golf ball from edgy indie golf brand, Golf Refugees, would be more my style. ...And, I suspect, these high-tech balls with their heat absorbing black covers are a great way to combat cold golf ball syndrome.

Actually, I'm looking forward to trying Golf Refugees' black golf balls on snow-free courses too... as the weather warms up and the official CT golf season finally begins... because their Thermal Distance Technology works all year long.

UK based Golf Refugees also produces edgy collection carbon neutral organic cotton polos and t-shirts, and - how awesome is this? - a disposable golf bag. Check out their website ...and their blog... but traditionalists beware: These guys are not afraid to mix it up.

Meanwhile, I've got my eye on a frosty par three just outside my window.

Cute Spanish Golf Guy, Álvaro Quirós, Wins in Qatar

I apologize for the somewhat vacuous headline.

What I'm trying to say, is that it was lot's of fun to watch Álvaro Quirós, the lanky, six foot three inch, Panama hat wearing, stylishly sideburned, perpetually smiling Spaniard, as he scored a tumultuous final-round 69 to complete a three-shot win at the European Tour's Qatar Masters in Doha, today.

The charismatic big hitter from Cadiz had some tense moments today. After beginning three shots clear of the field he let his closest challengers, Henrik Stenson and Louis Oosthuizen, infiltrate, and Stenson to steal the lead with an eagle at the 10th. Sr. Quirós recovered with a couple of birdies then almost lost everything on the 15th when his ball found water. He righted that wrong by sinking a 15-foot putt for bogey then birdied 16 and 17 to pretty much close the deal. It was ultra exciting...a dramatic victory the colorful golfer with movie star looks. And the victory means Álvaro will probably be in Augusta in a couple of months.

Social networking added to the enjoyment, as I was able to share it all on Twitter with my friends from Fuera de Límites the awesome Spanish golf blog. And speaking of social networks, I just joined the Álvaro Quirós fan club on Facebook.

Nikki Garrett - Multiple Albatross Golf Girl

Have you ever hit an albatross?

Neither have I. The albatross is a rare bird, and a rare feat in golf. That's what makes Nikki Garrett's albatross... on Oatlands Golf Club's par-five fourth, at the NSW Women's Open yesterday... so impressive.

And you know what's even more impressive? It was her third such bird. Ms. Garrett bagged her first Albatross when she was only 14, then another when she was 20, both at her home course Tuggerah Lakes on Australia's Central Coast. Friday's feat was accomplished with driver and a four iron, and the resulting seven-under-par 65 round earned her a course record...briefly. Ubertalented Korean-born Australian, Sarah Oh, caught up to share yesterday's lead, and today sailed to the top of the board where she currently resides at 10 under...while Nikki's 1-over 73 has her trailing at six-under.

We'll see what tomorrow brings to scorching New South Wales. In any case I got a kick out of the gorgeous Ms. Garrett's rather nonchalant reaction to her amazing Albatross.

"I saw it land on the green but didn't see it go in. I saw a guy clap and I thought, 'Cool'."

What Tiger Woods Really Means, Elegantly Elucidated

You may not know it from reading this blog, but Tiger Woods is a really big deal for me. I do write about him, but not often, because I figure he's being covered to a fare-thee-well by just about everyone else who writes about golf...and because this blog specializes in the lighter, fluffier side of golf. Tiger, needless to say, is neither light nor fluffy. That said, like every other golf blogger (writer, journalist, content producer) I'm perpetually attuned to Tiger news.

Earlier this week, on my daily golf blog meander, a stop at Three Putt Par...one of my favorite spots for honest, engaging golf content...led me to The Meaning of Tiger, an implausibly fine essay on the Tiger Woods.

I admire magnificent writing as much as I admire sensational golf, and this piece by Joe Posnanski is sublime. If like 96% of golf bloggers, you have a google alert for "Tiger Woods" you've probably already read it... and marveled over it. It's both lyrical and elegant. if you write about golf, this is what you aspire to, and if haven't read it, you simply must.

Golf Girl Media Plays Sawgrass...Sort Of

Vicariously... through Jason Sadler, the man who wears shirts.

I was pretty amazed to see Jason at Sawgrass. -When he told me he'd try to do something "golf-oriented" on "my day", I assumed I'd see him playing putt-putt or maybe wii Golf.

But there he was, at Sawgrass in his Golf Girl Media shirt...layered over what looked like black Under Armour...with his rusty left handed clubs. It was unusually icy in the sunshine state today too.

Then Jason did a livecast, like he does everyday, conversing with the people in the chat room. I was in the frozen tundra of New York City so couldn't be there, but watched it after the fact. Check both of these out at Jason's blog, along with his nightly recap. -Each evening Jason does a recap of the day's shirt activities. I made this video for that recap, and in it we announce the winner of the golf gift basket box; Nicole who has an awesome shopping site called The Sale Rack.

All in all it was a really good experience. Having Jason wear my shirt. He did a great job, in fact, I bought another day, July 22. We'll see what happens then.

The thing is, I really love this sort of thing. It's creative and cost effective and I think it's a great way to get a certain type of message out... to a certain type of person.

I'm just hoping maybe Jason takes a couple/few lessons before he puts my shirt on again. IWYS Day

Golf Girl Media Rents a Man's Chest

I know, it's an unconventional way to get a days worth of word-of-mouth advertising, but it's fun. I have a guy named Jason down in Florida wearing my shirt all day today. It's a unique concept and Jason was just written up the New York Times for it.

So follow Jason at iwearyourshirt.com I've told him he has to do something golf-oriented, we'll see what that ends up being. Oh, and don't forget to sign up for the contest. You can win an awesome golf gift basket.IWYS Day

Growing Golf in Some Unlikely Places

Growing the game of golf.

It's something we've been discussing quite a bit lately, as the economy continues to sputter, threatening all sectors of our sport. Finding current National initiatives lacking, one dedicated group of golf bloggers and golf blog readers, headquartered over at WaggleRoom, is even talking about a National "Take a Non-Golfer" to the course day. "TANG to the Course" is the catchy anagram they've come up with

The game is being methodically grown, however, in some rather unlikely places beyond our shores. I'm talking about Abu Dhabi, where the Abu Dhabi Championship just wrapped up. In this Arabian Gulf Nation, Standard Chartered Bank, a major sponsor of the Championship, has created a unique program to expose, foster and sustain a long-term presence of golf in Abu Dhabi, by targeting local youth.

There are bi-weekly sessions on golf etiquette, rules and course management as well as playing skills. The students are learning pitching, chipping, and putting, coached by two golf professionals from the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, where the Championship takes place.

This year's program recently culminated in a special coaching session, for the 10 best students given by French golfer Jean Van de Velde.

There were male and female students in the program and all express a desire to continue learning and playing now that the program is over. The girls - who's dress code is decidedly more "covered-up" than ours - especially loved the experience. Amila Al Shaybani, one of the participating students declared, "I enjoyed the game so much I have booked private lessons along with two of my classmates". It sounds to me like this program is creating golf evangelists in a country with no golf history at all.

Just imagine what we can do.

The Inauguration - A Celebration of Hope for Many

The past several months have been full of gloom and despair. Dire warnings of grave consequences have become part of the everyday news landscape.

Writing about golf, we don't dwell on this, but everyone is aware of it. And everyone knows everyone is aware of it.

The deteriorating economy is an 800 pound gorilla if ever there was one, and it's been sitting right in the middle of the room, since early September. We've just been politely talking around it.

But that doesn't mean we can't fully embrace something hopeful when it happens. And for many of us today feels hopeful. I, for one, am happy to celebrate that.

Golf Girl Bargain Alert: Huge Deal on Golf Shoes

I've said it before, but it bares repeating; a woman can never have too many pairs of golf shoes.

That would be like a geek having too many gadgets... or an average golfer getting too many birdies. While playing in a major. Against Tiger Woods. In other words; impossible.

But the fact is, we're in a recession, and that means shopping smarter. Not that I'll stop featuring the luxury brands, unique independent labels and superlative shopping experiences. I won't... because I have an intense appreciation for fine fabrics, exquisite, edgy design and top level customer service.. and I'll continue to indulge in them whenever I can.

But in this economy it makes total sense to supplement with less expensive products and discount shops. To that end, when I see a major bargain on something awesome, I'm going to let you know about it. Hence these incredible prices on stylish golf shoes at Overstock.com. Incredible as in: really cute little Sandbagger shoes for $31.99! I just bought all three styles above for less than $100, including shipping! - And there are lots more where they came from including plenty of golf sandal styles (if you happen to like that sort of thing).

Now of course, at these prices, you'll be getting mainly past season's products and the sizes are going to be sporadic; If you're a 6,7 or 8, you'll need to spend some time hunting, and you'll feel like Cinderella's step sister as you find some of the dreamiest footware available only in tiny size 5s, or much too roomy 10s. But I finally found my size 7s. They're perfect additions to my massive golf shoe wardrobe and they're on their way to me now. But you've got to act fast, because as you can imagine, these deals don't last.

I suppose I must disclose that in the process of shopping for my bargain shoes, I did a bit of research and found a pair of Sandbagger shoes that aren't on sale, but that are so adorable I think I'll have to force encourage Nick to get them for me for Valentines day. I may have to remind him of the "never too many" rule.

Golf Course Lovers Back Together Again

Here's a sweet little story to start the week.

Swans... unlike a majority of humans... mate for life, and golfers at Paradise Point Golf Course in Camp Lejeune, were used to seeing a pair of swans, frolicking in water hazards, or taking the sun together along the fairways. Sometimes the graceful white birds even approach the golfers to beg for food. For several months however, there was only one swan on the course. Henry, the male was alone because his partner, Swannee Girl, was recuperating at a local wildlife sanctuary, from surgery to her foot. Henry meanwhile, became quite morose and, it seems, aggressive, which I'm sure was somewhat distracting for the golfers.

Recently however, Swannee was returned to the course and reunited with Henry, who promptly made enthusiastic advances that involved neck biting ... again, probably a bit distracting, I mean, have you ever tried to hit your tee shot in front of a pair of mating swans?

Nonetheless, it seems the majority of golfers and course employees are happy to see the swans together again and are keeping a watchful eye on them. There's even a wildlife rehabilitater on call. And while the salacious swans may not improve any one's golf game perhaps they can serve as roll models for committed relationships.

Boyfriend Loves Golf - Girlfriend Should Learn to Play

"Jessica isn't really that interested in golf, but she really wants to get better at it. It will give her more time to spend with Justin, since he plays 18 holes a couple of times a week."

A wise decision, I would say. And the same would be true if Jessica was the passionate, 6 handicap, tournament sponsoring, Callaway representing, course owning, golf fanatic and Justin was... not really that interested. It goes both ways.

We all know about Justin Timberlake's golf obsession. In 2008 alone, the world famous superstar did in fact plan the renovation of the golf course he purchased, sponsor a major tournament, sign a deal with Callaway and appear on the cover of golf digest. Other than Tiger Woods I can't think of anyone who can boast a more substantial list of golf accomplishments in one year. The guy clearly loves golf.

Justin's girlfriend, actress Jessica Biel, was recently spotted at the Riviera Country Club diligently working with a pro. She's been seen in the past doing the same at Brentwood Country Club.

I can only guess that all this time spent on gorgeous golf courses, in adorable golf outfits might ultimately turn Jessica into a golf fanatic in her own right, and that's where the whole learning golf to please your boyfriend (or girlfriend, or huband or wife) begins to bear fruit. The more people who play... and love... this game, the better. Especially in this dubious economic environment.

So if your significant other is not really interested. It's time to put a little pressure on.

Golf Girl's Valentine Tips - On Cocktail Match

A couple of months ago I told you about a unique social networking site called Cocktail Match built around the idea of virtual bars - VBars - where you choose your preferred spirit (mine's champagne, bien sur) and you build your VBar community around it; for networking, dating or just hanging out. - A number of golfers have launched VBars; Rob from Golf Views, (the excellent golf gear review site) has a beer bar, and recently posted a great story about Phil Bundy, who's son has inspired him try to make the PGA tour, at age 43. If you're in the mood for a Scotch visit Jim from the 19th Hole or Brad from Brad's Wonderful World of Golf.

Oh, and Cocktail Match founder Al Escamilla knows something about golf too. He and his beautiful wife Krista (she has a wine bar, BTW) love the game so much they made a conscious decision to raise a golfing family. They transformed their back yard into a putting green, and three of their four young children play, their fourth, little Alex, hasn't warmed up to the game, but then again, he's only two months old. Give him a few months.

As for my count-down to Valentines Day, that's where you'll find it, over at Cocktail Match, twice a week through February 14th.Read it here and check it out regularly.

While you're there you may even want to start your own bar. I'll definitely stop by for a drink.

Denial: Kate Hudson Not Dating Golf Guy Adam Scott

OK, so they frolicked on a beach together in Hawaii, but that doesn't mean they're...like...dating or anything. Frolicking, if you didn't know...does not necessarily imply a romantic involvement.

The rumors began to circulate when the sexy/cute Hollywood actress was spotted with the sexy/smoldering Aussie golfer, enjoying the surf and sunbathing at Hawaii's Kapalua Resort. Soon... as will undoubtedly happen when two hot, young, famous people frolic together... the stories got more salacious:- Ms. Hudson was purported to be,"flirting up a storm" with Mr. Scott, who finished the recent Mercedes-Benz Championship in a tie for 18th.

Then came the inevitable "canoodling". - Well, canoodling does imply a romantic involvement...I think.

Anyway, now both are denying the romance rumors. Hudson did it through her publicist who came out with a very original, "they're just friends", while Scott handled it himself after the final round of the Championship, Sunday, telling the press,"I'm not here with her, but I know Kate," and I'm guessing he did not mean in the Biblical sense.

Since her divorce from a perpetually unkempt looking rock star person a couple of years ago Kate Hudson, has been linked with Lance Armstrong and recently Alex Rodriguez. She also had a liaison with actor Owen Wilson. He's been known to play a decent round of golf and together with his brother Luke is involved in the golf apparel business.

My analysis of all this news: Despite competition from cycling and baseball, golf has the clear advantage, and I wouldn't believe the denials just yet.

Skimpy, See-Through Top Banned Down Under

A dress code controversy is brewing in Melbourne, and though it involves tennis not golf, I think it's worth noting, because our sport often grapples with issues of attire ... and, well...because I love a good dress code controversy.

Today's attire quagmire is taking place at the Australian Open, and the subject is Alize Cornet, a pretty French teenager, currently her country's top player. Alize who turns 19 on January 22, has been know to push the proverbial envelope, with both her aggressive game and her tiny little (ultra-cute) outfits. Well, this time it looks like she may have pushed a bit too far.

The daring demoisselle caused a stir last week at the Hopman Cup, an event leading up to the Open, when she wore what was described as a revealing, see-through top during a doubles match, and now female tennis stars are being asked to cover up...or risk a $2,000 fine in Melbourne.

This must a disappointment to those girls (I'm thinking...Serena) who planned to wear something wonderfully risque, not to mention the legions of male fans who's taste in tennis attire tends towards the short, skimpy and skin tight...preferably sweat-drenched, and worn sans undergarments.

Could things get this crazy in professional golf... with fines imposed and officials doubling as fashion police? - I don't think so. Not for a while anyway. Despite the (welcome) arrival of sexier fairway fashions, golf is still quite a bit more covered-up than tennis, and I don't see the current crop of LPGA players...or apparel makers... pushing hard for more revealing styles.

Though I'm quite certain some many most of their male fans wouldn't object too vehemently if they did.

Golf Rivalry - Annika Marries, Lorena Gets Engaged

Annika Sorenstam vs Lorena Ochoa. Less than a year ago it was potentially the best rivalry in golf.

But the months went by... Annika announced her retirement, and the fierce showdowns never materialized. Some wryly lamented that golf fans had been robbed of a killer golfing slugfest.

In the end, the Lorena/Annika rivalry wont go down in golf history in the way Tiger/Phil or Arnie/Jack undoubtedly will. It just didn't have time.

However, perhaps there's another rivalry going on between these two accomplished ladies. One that has less to do with sport and more to do with sentiments; As you've probably heard Annika got married on Saturday to Andrew Mike McGee, who's been her very significant other for three years. There's a gallery of beautiful wedding photos at Golf.com (some guys are wondering why the photos are online, but...hello... Mars/Venus...girls LOVE wedding photos) - Anyway, what you might not have heard is that the lovely and talented W#1, Ms. Ochoa is now engaged.

Acording to Quién, the bi-weekly Mexican magazine, Andres Conesa Labastida, the handsome CEO of Aeroméxico, proposed to Lorena during a romantic European trip in December. They plan to marry at the end of this year. So, what do you think? Is this Lorena's attempt to continue some sort of competition with her former rival.

Certainly not, but it makes a fun story.

Golf Girl's "Monday Mention" - Golf Blogs of Note

As we discussed last week, there are suddenly so many options when it comes to golf media.

The major golf publications all have a web presence, and golf blogs are burgeoning.
As a result, my google reader is overflowing! - So much so, that I can hardly keep track all the great golf destinations. And some of the new sites are so unique... I feel compelled to share them.

So that's what I'll be doing every Monday. I'll profile a golf site...just one. I'll choose sites that are unique... sites that speak with a distinctive voice and cover unusual events. The winning site will get a Monday Mention here on Golf Girl's Diary.

An this week the Monday Mention goes to Golf Couture. A fun, young, thoroughly modern blog by the exceptional Nisha Sadekar. Nisha is a golfer (U of MO, and Futures Tour) and a golf blogger and a businesswoman. In addition to her reporting and writing at Golf Couture, she runs a Las Vegas company called Play Golf Designs, that provides golf outings and management services to individuals, companies, corporations and charitable organizations at golf courses around Vegas. You can learn more about Play Golf Designs on the company's Web site.

Now back to the blog. Golf Couture gives you an awesome insiders view of Nisha's life as the young, beautiful, single CEO of a golf business in Las Vegas. Yes, it could totally be a TV show. Nisha also opines on things happening in the golf world with a rare humor and openness...and a totally contemporary voice.

So check out Nisha's fabulous blog, and don't forget to check back here the first day of each week for my "Monday Mention".

Hey, if you have a golf blog that's cool and unusual, let me know about it. Tell me in a couple of sentences what's special about it, or where your passion for golf comes from. I'll be featuring new blogs and blogs that have been around for a while. As long as they're currently active, I'd like to hear about them at thegolfgirl@gmail.com

The Rapidly Changing Golf Media Landscape - II

The conversation has been continual today; in comments, emails, IMs and on Twitter... readers and fellow golf bloggers are speaking out, and the clear consensus is that "the traditional business model"... in golf, like in every other niche... "won’t keep working.”

As blog readers, web surfers and Twitterers, the participants in today's online discussion are ahead of the curve tech-wise, thus comfortable in the digital world. However, even people like my Dad, a total technophobe, and voracious daily reader of the New York Times, are beginning to acknowledge the changes taking place (not that he's agreed to learn how to use a computer or anything).

TechCrunch, the popular and respected technology blog, wrote about the digital future of media just yesterday. The post presents all the evidence one needs to be convinced that the future of media is digital.

Of course this transition is not going to be painless for anyone. Transitions rarely are.

Golf manufacturers, course owners, and golf service providers are going to have to figure out where they want to put their advertising dollars in an environment that suddenly offers so many new options.

Traditional golf publications are going to need to enhance their web presence, some have already done this successfully, others are not quite there yet. They'll also need to decide if they want to enter the social media fray and really communicate with their readers. I hear a number of comments to the effect of, "... the "creators" of the media need to be more in touch with the "consumers" of the media - currently, they are way too out of touch".

As for independent golf content producers bloggers, vloggers and podcaster... They're going to have to figure out how to get paid for their work... whether by monetising their blogs with ads or creating premium content for paid subscribers or through various sponsorships... otherwise their production won't be sustainable.

Finally there are the consumers. Initially this may seem like a win/win for the consumer, but there are pitfalls to the disarray; Content may be getting cheaper and more accessible, and some of the independently produced content is excellent. However when you take away the newsroom, the copy editors and the regular schedule, you often get poorly researched, poorly written pieces that come along whenever a particular blogger is feeling inspired.

So, as we head into 09 , we do so not knowing exactly what the golf media landscape of the future will look like. We just know it's changing, and after all, most of us recently voted for change, right?

The Rapidly Changing Golf Media Landscape I

In the golf media world, the denial may have lasted a bit longer than it did elsewhere, but today even the die hard print evangelists are recognizing...if not fully embracing... the internet.

There's no denying that the economic downturn...the major one that began circa September...added a certain urgency to what was an inevitable shift. Over just the past few months I've seen veritable tsunami of golf publishers... both established and brand new, rushing in... They're creating and revamping and enhancing their sites while hastily creating Facebook and Twitter accounts and attempting to understand these new media platforms.

This is a huge topic. One that elicits substantial emotion, and one with far reaching implications for both consumers and producers of golf content. I'll be exploring it here later today as I update this post. In the meantime, if anyone... reader or writer... has an observation, comment or opinion I'd love to hear it.

Birthday Bargains at Pink Golf Tees

Happy 1st Birthday PGT!

In one short year, Pink Golf Tees has become much more than an on-line retailer for ultra-cute golf stuff; thanks to hands-on founder and CEO, Jennifer Wentworth, it's a community.

Jen's a blogger and a social networker. I meet up with her all over the internet, especially in places where subjects like women's golf, golf fashion and the LPGA are being discussed. Her passion for the game of golf is obvious...and contagious. And she's got great taste, so when you head to her shop you know you'll find an amazing collection.

The Pink Golf Tees site is user-friendly to the max and I had no trouble finding the unique independent apparel and accessorie brands I love; like Pahr Golf, Ame & Lulu and Death to Argyle (yeah, I adore argyle but I love Death to Argyle - go figure). If you're in the market for equipment, you'll find some of the most innovatively stylish gear anywhere. Brands that'll get you attention AND performance, like Sweet Spot Oh yes, and guys: Jennifer hasn't forgotten you. She's got men's stuff, and it's as unique and edgy as her girl's gear.

Golf Helps One Girl Catch the Eye of The Bachelor

To be honest, I had no idea reality TV was still pumping out new versions of The Bachelor.

I thought it all ended back in '06 when everyone started questioning the bona fides of exotic bachelor Prince Lorenzo Borghese of Rome New Jersey.

But I was wrong. The lowbrow love connection is still going strong. Season 13 has just launched on ABC, and along with spinoff, The Bachelorette, it remains wildly popular. I guess the success is in their mathematical formula:

∫∞ [killer abs + chiseled arms] ± [long tan legs + ample cleavage] ∈ premium booze ∩ body shots ÷ epic Mars/Venus meltdowns = Hit Show

It actually seems to work!?! As they say; Who da thunk it?

Anyway, it seems one clever young lady on this latest incarnation of the show is wise to a little known fact that should be second nature to single women seeking mates...or dates: golf is an excellent way to to connect with a high quality guy.

Molly Malaney set herself apart from the 25 other desperate highly motivated ladies with this flirty opener, "I hear you're a golfer. What's your swing?"

I'm assuming she meant swing speed, or swing style, but in any case bachelor Jason Mesnick, himself a former country club golf pro, liked it; Molly advanced to the next episode with the Top contenders. I'm thinking those other ladies better get their derrieres to the range ASAP, or Molly's going to get that final rose for sure.

In the meantime perhaps we can look forward to a golf course date on a future episode. I might even tune in for that.

The NYT Natalie Gulbis Twitter Interview

Last week, when I first told you about finding Natalie Gulbis on the social site, Twitter, I mentioned she'd be talking about it in an interview...with the New York Times, no less. Well, the interview is here, and it's quite interesting.

It profiles Natalie's Twitter style compared to that of another famous athlete, the larger than life basketball star, Shaquille O’Neal. Yep, he's on there too.

The way these two stars communicate on Twitter is quite different, but the fact is, each is reaching out to a new audience in a new, and much more direct way.

As the article points out, this kind of intimate communication is not without risks, but the rewards can be great too, as it establishes an affinity and an accessibility that will certainly create more dedicated fans.

I give them both Kudos for taking the plunge and Twittering. And I look forward to reading their "Tweets" in the future.

The Hogan's Alley Golf Challenge You Can Enter

In 1948 alone, Ben Hogan won 10 tournaments... including the U.S. Open at Riviera Country Club, a course known as "Hogan's Alley" because of his success there.

In a few weeks, the Northern Trust Open will be held at Riviera Country Club with some of today's best golfers in the field. And there's a trip to be won. A trip that includes a 4-night hotel stay, airfare and tickets to the tournament in Pacific Palisades, California.

I just entered, you should to. There are lots of other prizes... and there's a really fun game that'll let you test your skills on some challenging Rivera Golf holes.

It'll also provide some much needed distraction from this first day back at work after the holidays.

Golf Ball Story Used In Attempted Sex Assault

This shocking story took place last month in an elegant gated community bordering on beautiful Stoneybrook West Country Club in Winter Garden, FL.

If you have a house on a golf course, you half expect the place to get hit with an errant ball occasionally. But what you probably don't expect is for a guy to come to your door and claim, apologetically, to have hit your house with a golf ball... then attempt to barge in and attack you when you open the door to discuss it with him.

That's exactly what happened to one Winter Garden resident. Fortunately she was able to fend off her attacker.

Area residents have now been warned to keep doors and windows locked. The attacker was described as a white male wearing a baseball cap with with a navy logo, plus brown pants and a brown jacket. In other words, he looked just like just about every golfer out there...like the golfer-next-door.

So this is a cautionary tale. One that should remind us that, even in the gated sanctuary of an exclusive golf community one can no longer completely let their guard down.

Sergio Garcia & Natalie Gulbis - Yes, Golf is Hot

This delightful photo was taken at a recent photo shoot for the new TaylorMade products. According to Natalie (on Twitter), Sergio was great to work with, and made the photo shoot "so much fun".

I think it's safe to surmise that Sergio had a similar reaction his day with the gorgeous Ms. Gulbis.

I just think it's sensational to have two such appealing stars representing golf.

Counting on The Online Golf World in '09

The new year is almost a day old, and I've got to say... it's going really well for so far. Last night's party at the MGM Grand was fun and festive, and I wisely avoided overindulging getting plastered for a change. So I was able to enjoy a lovely New Year's brunch today, and a hangover-free ride back home.

I'm realistic about 2009. I believe the economists who predict that the entire year will be challenge, for almost everyone. In golf, there'll be closings... of courses and companies... and cutbacks in how much people play or spend on golf products. I think that's inevitable. However, I'm an optimist by nature and I'm not depressed or morose by any means. In fact, I'm looking forward to doing things better this year; I hope to work better, live healthier and give more in 2009... and I don't think I'm alone in my 09 aspirations either. I've talked to a lot of smart people in various golf businesses who plan to use the downturn to do things they didn't have time to consider in the boom times; charitable, innovative and out-of-the-box things. I look forward to profiling this trend in stories and videos as the year progresses.

And the thing is, I see the online world playing an increasingly important roll in golf as the economy continues to struggle. Collectively, online golf content producers are developing new ways of thinking about the game. These ideas will help introduce golf to a new audience and keep current fans and players engaged during the economic downturn. Lately, it seems I'm discovering at least a couple of new golf blogs everyday. Some of them very unique and well rendered. Golfcentric Social Networks are multiplying, while Golf focused groups on platforms like Facebook and Twitter are attracting members (and followers) from the across the US and around the world.

Athletes are beginning to communicate directly with their fan on social sites as well. The always enchanting Natalie Gulbis recently began twittering, and is now reaching fans in a personal and intimate way... because she's engaging them in a social space. Ms. Gulbis is one of the first professional golfers to Twitter, but she certainly won't be the last. It's just too good a way to reach and grow an audience. BTW - earlier this week Natalie was interviewed by the New York Times on the subject of her twittering. I know, because I follow her there. Look for the article tomorrow.

Some would say golf has been slow to embrace the digital world, remaining wary of blogs and social networks while other industries adopted it. I'd have to agree with that on some level. I've been writing Golf Girl's Diary for two and a half years now, and I've been an evangelist for golf on Facebook and Twitter for nearly as long, and it's only within the past few months that I've seen a real influx of recreational golfer and golf professionals of all sorts. The time, decidedly, is right. 2009 may just be the year the online golf world comes into it's own. I'm optimistic it will.
