"Only Two Things" - Post-Show Wrap Up - 6/10/10

First of all... and once again... mega-thanks to all who listened, followed (in the chat room) and called in. If you didn't catch the show you can listen to a recording here. Note: sound quality is still a work in progress but we're putting a couple of changes in place and next week's audio should be great.

The topic: Golf on Mars vs Golf on Venus - Sexual Stereotyping on the Golf Course is one many appear to have firsthand experience with and that's what we're looking for.

I'll be doing a post-show wrap up, every week from now on, mainly to post links to the stories I discuss in the first part of the show... the golf part. The following are this week's links:

  2. It sounds like pace of play is the factor that creates the most controversy and I have to admit, from everything I've seen it's men who slow things down. In my experience women, when they're playing with other women, always keep it moving. They will not search around for lost balls nor will they study each putt like a million dollars was on the line. All the women I see defy the "women play slow" stereotype. The exception being when they're playing with husbands or boyfriends. Those types of groups are the worst offenders and the ones I dread seeing in front of me. The husbands-boyfriends will inevitably be coaching their ladies intensively throughout the round and feeling like it's OK to keep those behind them waiting and I guess I can't blame the ladies for taking advantage of the free lessons, though most of them seem like they wish their guys would just shut up and play. My rule: mixed foursomes should never be allowed on a crowded course. ;)

    RE Pace of Play

actually it is NOT ONLY a gender issue

for example, if the Tee Times are distanced SEVEN minutes or less apart - you're gonna have a problem

also for example, if the course layout has a par 5 followed by a par 3 - you're gonna have a problem

if the course starts with a par 3 - you're gonna have a problem

force carried greater than 150 yards - your'gonna have a problem

men and women both will stall at the above few examples, and there are many more i could cite

MEN will rue WOMEN based on PERCEPTION in their minds - the reality may be otherwise, of course, but just ask any man golfer what he THINKS the pace of play will be playing behind women and i can almost guarantee the answer

again, this is NOT the case in europe

    anyway be well

  6. Frank, you're so right on Europe! I've played a number of times in France and was always amazed that there didn't seem to be nearly the sexual stereotyping that exists here. The thing is in France each course I went to... and a couple of them were local munis... had a fairly equal male/female ratio. In the US it's rarely more that 80/20 and often less.

Men just seemed to be more used to playing with women there. :o0

  7. I must admit that women are sometimes playing slowly, but it's like men. I mean, it depends on their game level. But when I play competition with men, we always search a dozen balls (their balls usually) on the course.

And speaking about couples, it's funny to see how a married man or fiancé seems to become instantly a "golf pro" when he plays with "his" women golfer. Because when you see him hit the ball, the first thing you wanna do is laugh. You were so full of expectations !...

  8. Laurence is so right about the husband teacher. Mine knows enough to keep the "advice" to a minimum but we used to play with a couple where he was constantly teaching her. The worst part was, it was like no one else existed. She missed a putt and he'd tell her to try it again, this when people are waiting!! I play with her in a league but never again as "as couples".
