Only Two Things: A "Men Only" Grill - OK or No Way?

This is a touchy one. The Men's Grill, that bastion that exists at many clubs... it's often a bar/casual dining establishment... it may involve cigars and/or cards and/or a big screen TV or two.

The common denominator however is that women are not permitted inside. Sometimes they're given their own "room" sometimes not, either way though the "Men Only" room is off limits to the "fairer sex"... which many women find decidedly UNfair. Some men don't like it either but at the same time there are quite a few men... and women... who are fine with it. So what do you think?

That's what we'll be talking about tonight on "Only Two Things". We'll be broadcasting from 9:30 - 10:30PM ET. And you can weigh in, on-air by using call-in number 917-889-9592. Or join the conversation in the chat room or on Twitter... or just listen at BlogTalkRadio. Talk to you tonight.

  1. .

i honestly didn't think the man cave of a men's grill room existed anywhere anymore - do they ? where are they ?

public smoking is typically no longer allowed anywhere anymore (and forget all about lighting up a cigar)

    and

since the average round of golf takes five hours on the course, who has time afterwards ? (i do but most don't)

  2. An interesting topic. The separation of the sexes is OK from time to time. Guys like guy time. We get to say and do things that offend some women but won't offend most men. It can be therapeutic.

On the same note, women need some time to spend with their female friends or acquaintances as well.

If this discussion is about a private club, I say separate space is OK. If it's a public course, then I say No Way.

Just the thoughts from your local neighborhood Golf Die Hard.

  3. i have never seen one of these type of places but i am far from the country club type. i will bet those attractive female cocktail waitresses are still allowed in.

  4. lol - I can see how this one will come out. If men want a place for themselves - it's sexism and bad.

When women demand their own place, or have one - that's fine because they're women. If a man dares to attempt to storm the castle the way women do - that man gets to go to jail or is put up for public ridicule.

  5. Oh yes, they do still exist. A friend of my belongs to a club in TN near Nashville I think called Bluegrass Country Club. To this day it has a "Men Only" grill. It also has a "Mixed Grill" which sounds like an menu item involving a variety of grilled meats but is actually a restaurant open to both men and women! Seriously. ;)

  6. Call me crazy, but I really don't care if the guys have a men's grill. I've said this before, but it keeps all the piggies (and stoggies) in one convenient stinky pen.

I'd like a women's "grill" too and not a frilly place to have tea, but a place to hang, chat, drink and socialize.

Just not a big deal to me. Now if Hubbie wants to join a "men's only" golf club that's another story. ;o)

  7. Most of the CCs that have them will say, we have a ladies lounge and a men's grill or we have a ladies card room and a men's grill but they'll rarely say a ladies grill and a men's grill. They clearly don't feel ladies want/need a "grill" type place. :)

  8. I think the question should be why wouldn't it be ok? What's the harm? There are ladies only gyms to let women workout in a comfortable pressure free environment.

  9. A private club, should be able to decide who is/isn't admitted... as long as that club isn't taking public money (or receiving tax breaks).

In the case of the "men only" restaurants, if they're at clubs where women pay the same dues as men it's up to women not to become members... if it bothers them.

  11. I've heard of the mixed grills... kind of entertaining etymology though, I never knew that's why it was called mixed.
