The concept of male/female play is very different v. issues as you all describe. A round of golf at this fantastic place usually involves relatives, pets, kids, and other non playing observers. One rule I am aware of is that it is considered very bad form for a husband to instruct his wife (i have seen wives threaten to clunk an offending spouse on the head w/ mashie for such an offense).

One of the main events of the year is called the "old folks open" where, you guessed it, the most "advanced" players compete in classic match play competition - winners have been known to break down and cry in front of the entire town when presented with the top medal. What is so wonderful about this place is that the plumber, carpenter, lawyer, judge, business owner... etc all play together and families mix on the course every weekend.

The knowledge of the game and level of expertise is astonishing ... the hardiest players take very few lessons at Machrihanish - they seem to favor "home-grown, wristy punch shots that fly under the wind" - the course is a topic of endless discussion - but in a more classic sense - conversations are driven by the elements rather than what the greenskeeper has or hasn't done for players.

A true test of golf and breath of fresh air. Try it and discover a different game v. what we know and describe...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640652526116928447.post-4928343518249680662010-06-09T17:00:09.716-04:002010-06-09T17:00:09.716-04:00as for MIXED foursomes

Some men just cringe to see a women foursome in front of them. We've had men actually go into the pro shop and demand to be moved when they see us in front of them.

The staff assures them they won't see us after the 3rd hole. They complain about pace of play but really they don't believe women belong there on their course or should compete against them.

It's these type of people that I really don't enjoy playing with.@chowdownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640652526116928447.post-14888252101294804732010-06-08T17:44:44.705-04:002010-06-08T17:44:44.705-04:00Pretty solid observation on the etiquette of guys ...Pretty solid observation on the etiquette of guys getting on guys to speed up vs getting on a group of women.

It's taboo to hit a woman (or at least it's supposed to be - some guys don't get it, and some women take advantage of the courtesy) - and it's almost as taboo to yell at the women. It's an awkward situation in the cases when a group of women actually are the slow play culprits.

On the other hand - there are a lot of days when there isn't a woman on the course and it still takes 5 1/2 hours to get around.

It's not a gender issue - it's a courtesy issue. My brother's ex-wife would play with us and she couldn't break 100 on her best day, but we never took more than 4 hours to play.

Providing "caddies", eh ? Now that sounds like a fun weekend trip.courtgolfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15043365135385055405noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640652526116928447.post-89748693280893014062010-06-08T13:21:13.400-04:002010-06-08T13:21:13.400-04:00as for MIXED foursomes -
