I agree with you that it's only in having high profile players shake the boat that any change is possible.thegolfsharkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12134394081965354826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640652526116928447.post-43682251513534297752010-02-02T12:46:08.982-05:002010-02-02T12:46:08.982-05:00Things may just be heating up, Patricia. The word ...Things may just be heating up, Patricia. The word is out that Fred Couples intends to put an Eye2 wedge in his bag this week at the Northern Trust Open. Freddie and Phil playing controversial clubs at Hogan's Alley... let the fireworks begin!

BTW, it's not just sharp edges and soft balls that cause spin. High clubhead speeds are just as much a part of the equation as grooves. Last night on The Golf Fix, Michael Breed said that most people didn't realize that the softness or hardness of the ball has less to do with distance off the tee than performance around the greens. He suggested that players with slower swings go to a softer ball (not a harder one) to get that spin. You may not need sharp grooves to get that "juxtaposition" after all, Patricia. (Or you, Heather!)Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11719298227225074496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640652526116928447.post-61006315069746302782010-02-02T10:17:16.717-05:002010-02-02T10:17:16.717-05:00"it came from the juxtaposition of a soft bal..."it came from the juxtaposition of a soft ball and the sharp grooves on a lofted wedge, but in the deft hands of skilled golfers it just seemed magical."

That's some sweet prose, Ms. Hannigan!

I wish I liked golf.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14870265871547100192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640652526116928447.post-43131573126159553522010-02-02T07:28:50.610-05:002010-02-02T07:28:50.610-05:00Calling Mr. Mickelson a cheater is absurd. But I'll be interested to see if he keeps playing them.

As for the grooves, I miss seeing the incredible spin pros can put on the ball. Something I hoped to learn someday.

You make a valid point, Patricia, on the confusion factor. If I understand the rule correctly, amateurs can enter scores with the current clubs until 2024. But I'm not sure when, or if, it applies to club championships and other tourneys. I understand it impacts qualifiers and that makes perfect sense.

My experience with competition is that players call penalties that they would let normally let slid during a round of weekend warrior golf.

For example, on one of my ladies day golf outings it's unlikely someone would call a penalty on another gal for "patting down" spike marks on green. However, during competition that would definitely happen.

In a nutshell, I think the confusion is just beginning.Heather Kerriganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09479515041675909393noreply@blogger.com
