Michael Jonzon Ends His 12-Year Drought

.

CASTELLON, Spain, was good to Michael Jonzon this weekend. Twelve years without a win came to an end for him on the fairways and greens of the Club de Campo del Mediterraneo at the 2009 Castello Masters, with an impressive 20-foot putt at the 18th to break a three way tie and avoid a playoff.

... And this win brought with it a cute, kissable trophy.

It looks like Mr. Jonzon really got into the kissing part too. ...and that's understandable... sort of... because the stocky, Swedish 39-nine-year-old was on the verge of losing his tour card. Had that happened it would have meant yet another stint in Q-School, a scenario Mr. Jonzon is all too familiar with.

And Michael Jonzon wasn't the only Swede who unexpedtedly impressed the crowds at the Club de Campo del Mediterraneo. Christian Nilsson birdied six straight holes in the final round capped by a 30-foot birdie putt on the 12th, which hung on the edge of the hole for several seconds before falling in. He finished one back from his countryman in a tie for second with Martin Kaymer.

How do you say fist pump in Swedish? With much ferocity, it seems.

  1. You finally win a tournament and they give you a trophy that looks like that?

Thirty or so golfers win every year, some for the 2nd, 3rd or 10th time. But, most never win a tournament at that level. I am happy for anyone that wins a professional tournament. People do not really know how hard it is.

  3. That was some CLUTCH golf down the stretch. How about that putt at 18 to close out ? Good for him.
