They made history... twice... when they won the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup last November.
Francesco and Edoardo Molinari were the first pair of brothers AND the first Italians to ever win that event. And this week they'll add another page to their historical legacy...at the Accenture Match Play Championship... when they become the first set of brothers to take part in a World Golf Championships event.
Both acknowledge that it's great to have a brother along on tour. They exchange ideas on their games, practice together... and always have someone to have dinner with.
Of course it would be awesome to see Francesco and Edoardo meet in the finals of the Sam Snead bracket... which actually could happen. However, each would need to win his first three matches, starting with Stewart Cink for Edoardo, and Zach Johnson for Francesco.
So a Moliari vs Moliari match is kind of a long shot... but it's fun to imagine the possibility and it's a good opportunity for American golf fans to get more familiar with these rising stars of global golf who'll both be back on US soil in April for the Masters.
The Molinaris are the kind of story that's been forgotten in golf lately. Them, David Duval, Steve Stricker, Tom Watson... these are the kind of stories that just might help reshape the Tour's image over the next year.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great story and I agree with Mike. Who is the golf media writing for these days? In the past they seemed to be happy writing for a dying breed of "golf purist" types. Then the blogs came up, the ad dollars went down ... and the Tiger Incident happened. Now all of a sudden they're writing for young gossip/pop culture audience.
ReplyDeleteIt seems there's no thought given to the real golf audience and that's too bad. :(
As hard as people try, the big golf news is not the LPGA, Nationwide, Champions or European Tour. AND, it is not the PGA Tour. It is those dozen or so tournaments where the Euro and American tours use the OWGR's to determine the field. The majors, the WGC's, the FedEx and a few more. Anytime players like the Molinaris, Schwartzel, Villegas and Quiros are on the starter sheet, a large percentage of our press should be concentrating on these guys.
ReplyDeletePH, what are your thoughts on Alvaro's sideburns?
I'm very psyched to see the Molinari Brothers play. Also happy to see them rockin' the white belt.
ReplyDeletePatrica, I'm starting to think you may have more Molinari posts this year than ones on Sergio. ;o)
Heather, it's no surprise that Patricia's been "Molinariated." As much as I like Sergio, he isn't the one making waves on tour right now.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the guys didn't win their matches, but they did make history and it'll be great to see them at The Masters in April.
ReplyDelete...And you're right Mike, I'm moving on. I tried to make it work with Sergio, but he just wasn't that into me. >:(
