Smoking Spanish Golfer in Trouble with Parents

He had a great day on the course at the Omega World Cup, but young Spanish golfer Pablo Larrazabal is going to be in hot water when he gets home.

The 25 year old rookie, who won the French Open earlier this year, has been burning up the fairways at Mission Hills with his famously rougish playing partner Miguel Angel Jimenez. Playing on course designed by yet another Spainiard, Jose Maria Olazabal, the two Iberians took the World Cup lead today with a 63 in foursomes, that left spectators marveling at their amazing display of teamwork. After yesterday's 64 in four-balls, the pair is four clear of Australia and Germany in their quest for the cup.

However, a secret slipped out when, in an interview, the colorful Mr. Jimenez 44, (who during the Ryder Cup was described as looking like a retired porn star) spoke about the unique chemistry he had with his younger partner. "We both like red wine and we both like to smoke," was his explanation for his chemistry with the much younger Larrazabal. Oops.

It turns out Pablo has a very strict Dad...the type of Dad who makes you put your career on hold and work on the family fish farm to understand the value of money...and when the smoking story came out, that Dad was mad!

I love Spanish golfers. From Seve to Sergio..and across the board...The Spaniards seem to have a style and personality that brings the game to life, in a really special way, and now Spain in a good position to win the cup for the first time in over two decades. If this dream team can do that, Pablo might not even get grounded.

  4. World Cup Golf is wonderful and compelling. It's too bad the event doesn't get more support, from the International Federation, and from the top players.

  5. These two are great together. And when you think that Jimenez turned pro before Larrazabal was even born. It's pretty amazing.
