Ryo Ishikawa Shines at Pebble in Bubblegum Pink

Of my five unconventional eclectic and quirky US Open picks it was Ryo Ishikawa who fared best in round one... and on so many levels. His game was superlative and his outfit was over-the-top... in a good way.

The implausibly young Japanese champion, playing in his first ever US Open, finished just one back and wore and outfit took pink to a whole new level. Of course there were the inevitable comparisons to a famous anti-nausea medication but judging (as we do) from the reaction on Twitter, Ryo's rose colored fashion statement was well received.

Including this decidedly approving tweet from no less an authority on pink than @ThePCreamer!

you're just not old enough to remember what the guys, including nicklaus and watson and miller, used to wear in the "old" days

and when private golf clubs were really man caves there would be no end to the silly clothes an otherwise respectable man with good taste would be seen in

    anyway be well

  3. Frank -
I've seen the photos and... I love the looks! You aptly mention Johnny Miller, he was definitely one of the worst/best dressed in those days. He had a coupld of pairs of plaid Sansabelt bell bottoms that really rocked. Don't think he'd fit into them these days though. ;-)

  5. This time I think he went over the line... but he seems to be holding his own with the field so maybe the "pink overkill" works. Not that I could pull it off.

  6. "Implausibly young" ? No - he really is that age. Besides, hardly any (straight) male older would dress like Barbie. My theory was that he's actually a fan of Paula Creamer and he's showing his support for her return this week. :-D

  7. Totally awesome ~ and the shade of pink is perfect...AND he's a nice guy ~ he gave my little daughter one of his balls even when he was super busy at the Presidents cup! His ball has a GREAT illustration on it.

actually, the one fashion accessory the pro MEN have absolutely no imagination with is - the baseball CAP

thank you jesper parnevik for at least having some other take on it by turning up the brim

why must we go to europe to see a fedora or a beret or a stovepipe or a porkpie or a pullover beanie ?

even the old timers have straw stetsons or tommy bahamas or cotton bucket hats to break up the monotony of the baseball cap

I guess the idea is japanese flag color because he is big fan of football and today we japan have big match in FIFA World Cup of football.
    And he plays fantastic!

  10. Japanese journalist asked him for the message for Paula's twitter, and he answered "Nobody is better than her for the pink fashion! Anyway I can't wear a pink ribbon in my hair....you know!"

In Japan and Korea, lots of young and old men routinely wear pink, orange, etc. It's fashion. I imagine European men wouldn't be afraid to wear a little color either. They're comfortable enough w/ their masculinity to wear whatever color they want.

It's only in the States men are afraid to be somehow labeled gay or girl-y by wearing certain colors... In other places different colors aren't reserved for one gender. I think it's due to lack of fashion & imagination, and also due to homophobic attitudes.

    Loved the outfit!
