Ladies at the 19th Hole-Tonight on "Only Two Things"

The proverbial 19th Hole, that pub on or near the golf course where golfers go for a drink after a round. It's a fun place where the delights... and disasters... of the day can be rehashed, convivially, over a beer or cocktail. ~ But are ladies always welcome? Or, on the contrary, are they welcomed... a bit too warmly?

This debate arose out of a couple emails I received recently within days of eachother: The first was from a woman who wrote that she and her friends loved the idea of having a round of drinks after their round of golf, but that the bar at their club consistently attempted to seat them in an "isolated, undesirable corner of the room, far away from everyone else". She specified that she and her friends were basically the only women who ever patronized the establishment and whether it was busy or not, they had to lobby to be seated where everyone else was. ~ Then came a note that told a very different tale. This was from a gal who claimed she and her playing partners couldn't enjoy their post-golf cocktails at the course because they were continually "hit upon" by the "other" (aka: male) patrons.

So yes, there's definitely something to be debated here: When it comes to the "19th hole", are women less than welcome... or overly welcome? Or are they just making a big deal about nothing? That's what we'll be talking about tonight on "Only Two Things". ~ We'll be broadcasting from 9:30 - 10:30PM ET at SportCityChefs on BlogTalkRadio ...and as always, you can weigh in, on-air by calling 917-889-9592. Or join the conversation in the chat room or on Twitter at #onlytwothings.

    GOLFERS GET TO PLAY AROUND

well, with the ban on smoking everywhere these days and poker going co-ed, i guess the ladies can come join us now at the bar

for some, like myself, getting to the 19th is the reason i play the preceding eighteen on most outings

  2. The 19th hole at my club, is normally a fine place to have a drink or snack (the cheesy quesadillas are to die for). It's only on Saturday afternoons after a few beers on the course and a few more at the bar that some of the patrons get a bit too ... you know...friendly.

  3. Women shouldn't be complaining, they're the ones who never have to pay for a drink. :\

  4. lol - typical. women demand to be allowed everywhere, but men aren't. men aren't permitted to not want the women around - but if the places are reversed, the men are sexual predators and ruin the women's "right" to their own area.

aw, come on. most of us know how to behave and can actually occupy the same spaces. we do so at the grocery store, the mall, the workplace, church, restaurants. the problem is when people use alcohol to justify making fools of themselves. that said, i'm a fan of being very direct when it comes to rejecting unwanted advances. and when that doesn't work, moving to a space that is more inviting...

  6. I'm in sales and we frequently do team presentations on the road. We also attend conferences and trade show where after hours networking is required. This is where I see women running into trouble. Once they get married, and especially once they have children, they virtually disappear from such gatherings, thus forge fewer alliances with their co-workers, create fewer bonds with customers and often watch their careers stagnate. Men get married, have children and keep showing up at the after hours events and staying "till they turn the lights on" so to speak.

As far as the 19th hole is concerned it's probably a bit the same: women finish their rounds and rush home while men finish theirs and have a couple of drinks. And that's why the culture in such establishments is the way it is.
