Then... just yesterday... the young man from Gardabaer, Iceland captured another history-making win at the Cardinal Amateur in Greensboro, NC. That victory secured him a spot at this week's Wyndham Championship where he'll be the first Icelandic golfer ever to compete in a PGA Tour event.
Though not yet known for its professional golfers, Iceland does have a unique and vibrant golf culture, with 65 courses, and an active national golf union. The season...which generally runs from late May to early September... is somewhat short, but the days are long. In fact, midnight golf is generally playable all over Iceland between June and the later part of July.
By the way, here's the video of Ólafur Loftsson's awesome ace.

We're going to try to get out to the tournament this weekend we'll look for Olafur. ;)
ReplyDeleteAmerican kids are too distracted by baseball and football which are so crowded and competitive, to the point that many of them will never be able to go for athletic scholarships. That's good for the kids from other places but might be part of the reason we have difficulty winning majors nowadays. Keegan Bradley is exceptional as he comes from a golf family.
ReplyDeleteA boss of mine & his brother vacation in Iceland & think it's just the best ! Golfing there would have to be amazing!
ReplyDeleteThat is pretty impressive that UNC Charlotte recruited all the way out in Iceland, they are a fairly small school...but their golf team has been awesome over the past 5 years or so. I wish him the best in the Wyndham and hopefully I will be able to get out to the tournament to see him in action.
ReplyDeleteNo big deal ..... I play with Slappy Aganrsson from Iceland every weekend and beat him like a rented mule ... Icelanders are attracted to water hazards since they live on an island
ReplyDeleteHe actually came to America and first played for Oglethorpe University a D III school here in Atlanta(side note on of the top D III programs in America!). He helped them win a National Championship and Coach Owen helped get him in at UNCC. Thanks for the "notice" Golf Girl. I enjoy your blog.
