We know that much from the movie and the song... and myriad commercials. Well it seems guys are into them too... only not the sparkly kind. The diamonds showing up on the fairways and greens of Royal Lytham and St. Annes are the warm, wooly kind.

First round leader Adam Scott wore some impressive argyle on Friday. Not a sweater in the classic sense, but something the handsome Aussie refers to as a "zip neck jumper". In any case there'll undoubtedly be numerous inquiries on its origins and availability in the days to come, because Mr. Scott could wear a bin bag and guys would want to buy it. Aspirational marketing at its most effective.
Japanese golfer Tadahiro Takayama clearly wins in the "whimsical argyle" category. His argyle sweater featured a particularly delightful shade of pink that caught the eye of many. He wore it with jeans too, adding a working-class, renegade touch to what would otherwise be an ultra-preppy look. At least I'm guessing that's what he was going for.
Keegan Bradley's argyle complemented his icy blue eyes, a blue that was probably not reflected in the rain-filled pot bunker that gave him trouble at the 15th on Friday.
There were many others sporting some form of the diamond pattern and I can only imagine... and hope... that the weekend will bring additional argyle sightings.
It looks kind of chilly over there. I generally don't like argyle before Labor Day. ;)
ReplyDeleteA major for AS would be great!
ReplyDeleteA four shot lead can evaporate pretty quickly. I hope he pulls it off.

ReplyDeletea true sweater story from the st johns archives:
One day, a coach from Italy visited Carnesecca at St. John's Queens campus. "It's an Italian tradition to exchange gifts," Carnesecca recalled. "So the coach gave me a sweater - it was an ugly one, no style, no composition."
Carnesecca tossed the sweater into his closet and forgot about it - until one day in January, 1985. "I caught a cold," he said. "We had a game scheduled for that day, and my wife was worried the court would be drafty. 'Lou,' she says, 'why don't you wear a sweater?' Being a good husband, I went to my closet and got the sweater the coach had given me."
Carnesecca wore the sweater as St. John's took on the University of Pittsburgh, on January 14, 1985. St. John's won the game by "a last minute jumpshot." In his view, the sweater had brought good luck. "The sweater helped win the game," he said with a smile. "After that, I had to wear it. If I didn't, I'd hear all these St. John's kids yelling, 'Hey, Coach! Where's your sweater?' "
