The Morgan Pressel Look - American Classic

Watching Morgan Pressel win in Palm Springs over the weekend, with her long, straight, strawberry blonde hair and fresh faced smile, you'd think she just stepped out of a glossy Ralph Lauren add. There at Mission Hills Country Club she was the picture of casual-but-elegant, uber-preppy Ralph Lauren style. Well the fact is, Mr. Lauren took notice of this young player shortly after she won the 2005 Women's Amateur Championship, which is why she's not only appeared in his ads... Morgan's actually the female face of Ralph Lauren Golf. And now she's the youngest major champion in LPGA tour history, which is probably almost as much of a victory for self-made fashion billionaire Lauren, as it is for the new LPGA Champion herself. What could be better for the brand, right?

"I am pure 100% Ralph Lauren, on and off the course and have been wearing his clothes since I was 13 years old. I have always been somebody to wear bright colors. I think that some of the Polo colors you can't find anywhere else. That's one of the things that I love." Morgan said this about a year ago, upon the announcement that she would be joining the likes Davis Love III, Tom Watson and Luke Donald as a Ralph Lauren sponsored golfer. I agree... some of those polo colors are awesome.

To see some clips of Morgan and the other RL golfers talking about their golf games, their personal styles and their affinity for the iconic look of Ralph Lauren check out RLTV. If you're anything like me you'll find yourself lusting for the chance to buy into the Ralph Lauren lifestyle. I don't think there's much of a chance of my ever being a Ralph Lauren sponsored golfer, but who knows, maybe I could be a Ralph Lauren sponsored golf blogger, right?

  1. Lucky Morgan Pressel! I dream of Ralph Lauren golf clothes but they're way out of my league :(

  2. Morgan is cute, but I was hoping Paula Creamer would win. I really thought it was her turn for a major.

  3. I know you're all going to hate me for saying this; but Morgan Pressel should not be the face of Ralph Lauren. Her arms are the huge, coming from a male perspective, its very unattractive.

She's a great player; but not very attractive. Now; Natalie Gulbis or Paula Creamer would be a much better fit.

  5. Morgan is your typical trailer park trash with only a high school degree. You can put her in Ralph Lauren or what not, that still does not mask the fact that she is as classy as your typical American teenagers without an education. She is not in the same league as other RL-sponsored golfers like Luke Donald, Tom Watsons, and Davis Love III in term of class.

  6. Everyone is entitled to their opinion...and varying opinions definitely make the discussion more interesting.

Ryan, I realize that Morgan's buff build might off-putting to some...Remember how people complained when Annika bulked up...but the brilliant stylists, photographers and graphic artists who do the RL ads have made sure that she always looks great, and perfectly reflects the brand. (I wish I had them working for me) Check out the RL Golf site and her video clips there. It's all very RL... I don't think you'll be too distracted by her biceps.

And anonymous, I've got to say don't understand the trailer park trash reference. Is it because she chose to go professional upon completion of high school... instead of going off to play collegiate golf at Duke? Well, keep in mind that her decision to turn pro was made after a year in which she won the U.S. Women's Amateur, finished T-2 at the U.S. Women's Open, and had one other LPGA top-five. I think she was ready to move on and she realized that. Davis Love III, who you admit has class and who's play a round or two with her, describes here as "mature as any player I've ever seen in terms of handling herself and how she responds to people." I think there are quite a few collegiate golfers who'd fall short of her there. Nothing in her background or demeanor says Trailer Park to me either. So, I've got to say I don't know quite where it's coming from.

Patrick - As always, your photos truly reflect the feeling of the game. I just love them.

  7. What a win for such a young girl! She deserves it, Annika seems to have lost interest...

  8. Well that was a better response than I thought. I guess she needs to sit in the gym doing curls all day to keep up with Mannaka and Michelle Wie. But still, she is not very attractive, to say the least. But is one hell of a player.

I played competitively growing up; AJGA, Junior Worlds, US Junior AM, Pub links etc. And I know how good she is. I played with Erica Blasberg quite a bit, because she lived close to me and we used to travel to tournaments together, and she was soooo good. I mean when she was 14 and I was 17, she would give me a run for my money from the same tees.

And Erica isn;t even close to being as good as Morgan. I mean, Its hard to comprehend how good they really are. But even with huge arms, I think a congrats is in order. What a great final round and week.

  9. Erica is beautiful though isn't she? She's got Puma and Cleveland too so she's doing real well.

  10. Yeah, I had a bit of a crush on her when we were younger. I am fascinated by women who can beat me at sports, especially golf.

Since I started swimming competitively, I'm into hot swimmers. My options have opened up quite a bit, since I suck at swimming...lol

  11. Patricia,

Maybe class is not the right word. 'Grace' is what Morgan is lacking. Another players with similar traits is Christina Kim. Totally bad image for America.

Players with grace are Suzann Petterson and Brittany Lincicombe.

Erica blasberg is a good player and with a rather attractive face. But she simply does not have the talent.

Despite the result last week, best LPGA players with class and grace are still Lorena I-Choke-ah and Annika Sorry-I-Stunk.

  12. Patricia, I got in from Mission Hills as quick as I could...via Las Vegas of course.

Morgan has finally started growing up, hasn’t she? Butch Harman has really got her disciplined to shake off the negatives and build the physical strength she needs to compete at the level she now is playing. I walked with Morgan for three holes and her demeanor and emotions were so much different than when she played last year. She was happy and more relaxed...and yes, she looked great in the Ralph’s... Now if she would get a better club sponsor I think she could work her way to the top. She is very strong and as far as huge arms...they look well on her in person...TV just does not give these ladies any credit. But enough of Morgan...she will be passed up very soon by these two girls from Texas.

Stacey Lewis...she tied for 5th at the Nabisco and WOW...what a game for an amateur. I saw her and her father (caddie) in Pete Carlson’s Golf Shop in Palm Desert. She was picking out a shirt for her dad to wear for their Golf Channel interview. Stacey is so down to earth and what an athlete. She played the 6659yd course (about 300 yds longer than their normal track) like she was back home in Woodlands, Texas. This University Arkansas All Star is going to finish college before turning pro....so this should keep your anonymous commenter from going left on Stacey.

The second young lady to keep an eye out for her playing ability and style is Taylor Leon.....also an amateur that made the cut. Her score was not the best, but she did well for her first loop around Mission Hills Dina Shore Championship Course....as most, her putter let her down, And OH, boy, what a very elegant young lady...about 5’ 5” of elegance and 285 yard drives. From her Foot-Joys to the string of pearls around her neck, she is what I hope the LPGA will key in on as the look of the future. But, can she swing a Titleist driver???...Taylor’s level of play is no match for some of the men her age... Taylor comes from McKinney, TX, one of the semi-rural areas just north of Dallas...and she has been around the loop for a while in the junior golf rakes. Taylor is a sophomore at the University of Georgia and has a great women’s open record also.

You will be hearing me talk more about these two very good golfers and stylish dressers over on my site, but I wanted the you to get this information first, because behind Morgan...there are some really, really good young golfers coming to the LPGA.

(Yes, Vegas was fun too...more on that on my site..)

  14. "Morgan is your typical trailer park trash with only a high school degree."

I'm sorry, but do you even know her? She is anything but trailer park trash. The only reason she doesn't have a college degree is because she turned down a scholarship to duke, which might i add, she recieved at 16! How's that for trash.

  15. The chick from Boca, trailer trash? I'm writing this from within the glorious city of Boca Raton... let me check... nope, no trailer trash. Hey Morgan, call me.

  16. For those hating on Morgan you have got to be kidding me, she is best fit to be the cover girl of Ralph Lauren, she is cute and preppy...and a good golfer at that. The way she always pops her collars and her fashion sense is amazing...I am in love with her, plan and simple!!!
