Cute Spanish Golf Guy, Álvaro Quirós, Wins in Qatar

I apologize for the somewhat vacuous headline.

What I'm trying to say, is that it was lot's of fun to watch Álvaro Quirós, the lanky, six foot three inch, Panama hat wearing, stylishly sideburned, perpetually smiling Spaniard, as he scored a tumultuous final-round 69 to complete a three-shot win at the European Tour's Qatar Masters in Doha, today.

The charismatic big hitter from Cadiz had some tense moments today. After beginning three shots clear of the field he let his closest challengers, Henrik Stenson and Louis Oosthuizen, infiltrate, and Stenson to steal the lead with an eagle at the 10th. Sr. Quirós recovered with a couple of birdies then almost lost everything on the 15th when his ball found water. He righted that wrong by sinking a 15-foot putt for bogey then birdied 16 and 17 to pretty much close the deal. It was ultra exciting...a dramatic victory the colorful golfer with movie star looks. And the victory means Álvaro will probably be in Augusta in a couple of months.

Social networking added to the enjoyment, as I was able to share it all on Twitter with my friends from Fuera de Límites the awesome Spanish golf blog. And speaking of social networks, I just joined the Álvaro Quirós fan club on Facebook.

  1. When he hacked that fairway wood into the junk on 15 I thought Stenson was going to grab it...glad he didn't.

  2. There are so many golf courses on the Costa del Sol and the weather is perfect. No wonder there are so many good players from Spain. Wish we could see more of them on the PGA Tour. Keep up the good writing Patricia.

  3. So many thanks golfgirl!! I also thought that Stenson was going to get the win, but Alvaro estuvo grande!!!!
Yes spanish costa del Sol it has a great weather and great golf courses (valderrama, San Roque) but the weather is nicer in the Canary Islands, where I live, but no one, sure forget that in Spain there are just 330.000 golf licences, so that means, that the results we are getting, are incredible.
The best thing about Alvaro´s victory is that he is going to be 28 th in the world ranking, what means that he will be able to play de major, the wordl championships and play the PGA Tour...so I am sure we will watch him in US

  6. Yep, and he'll be here in Dubai this week!

Shame Camilo couldn't make it this week...think he's playing in the FBR in US instead of the Dubai Desert Classic.

  7. Better check your "gaydar" golf girl, Senor Quiros should likely be called Senor Queeros.

  8. He's actually the longest hitter on the European tour. BTW - Did you see when his ball got lodged in a tree on Saturday?

  10. It was a well-earned win for Sr. Quiros, and yes, I can see why the ladies enjoy his looks.

I do, however, think the gaydar comment above was out of line. First of all, it is unsubstantiated and secondly, irrelevant. Grow up, "anonymous."

  11. We tried to watch most of it, but my dear hubby channel surfs so much that I'm not sure how much we missed. But, yes. I'd say young Mr. Quiros is just about the finest specimen of a golfer that I've laid eyes on. Not too bad a player either...
