Safeway 3-way - Cristie Kerr Wins Portland Playoff

Charismatic Cristie Kerr has reason to celebrate.

She just claimed her 11th LPGA title at the Safeway Classic in Portland OR. ...And she won in style! In an ultra-exciting, three-way, sudden death playoff, she sunk an 18 foot putt for Birdie. Helen Alfredsson and Sophie Gustafson failed to make their birdies on that first playoff hole.

What makes Cristie's win even more remarkable is that she went into the final round four shots back, but with her characteristic determination, fired off a seven-under 65, for the lowest round of the tournament.

The photo at left was taken earlier this month when I met up with the gracious golf champion at the opening reception for a new Lacoste boutique in Greenwich,(CT).

That evening, just a couple of weeks ago, we spoke a bit about her hectic lifestyle on the LPGA tour. She had just arrived from three weeks... and a couple of big tournaments... in Europe, and was enroute to Ottawa for the Canadian Women's Open. Then directly out to Portland where she finds herself now... trophy in hand.

Quite a busy little schedule, wouldn't you say? But she handlea it all with ease and elegance. She smiles a lot, connects with all those around her, and always looks gorgeous. In addition she generously supports breast cancer research through her foundation, Birdies for Breast Cancer.

I think most everyone would agree, Cristie Kerr is a winner in a multitude of ways.

  1. I read that Cristie had worked really hard on her mental game. This is always important in golf, but at risk of sounding sexist I think the mental aspect is even more important for women than for men.

  3. I agree Cristie Kerr is dedicated to the game in a way some of the other LPGA stars don't seem to be. Natalie Gulbis and even Paula Creamer seeme to be too busy being pretty blondes showing off their long legs.

  4. It's great to have such a talented, skilled, charismatic and attractive champion --- but it's truly a shame that there is so little coverage of the LPGA. The tournament wasn't even televised ...at least as far as I could see. While my husband was watching Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia on CBS, the Golf Channel was showing...an info-mercial and Viagra ads. Shame on the LPGA, the PGA and the golf media for neglecting a key demographic group and ignoring the exciting starts of women's golf.

  5. e !!! Are you making a blond joke ?? :-D

Jennifer - when the Vijay/Sergio playoff was going on, the ladies were already done.

I really enjoy watching Cristie Kerr, and not just because she's great looking ! She has a very intense look when she's playing well.

  6. Cristie Kerr is beautiful and she's obviously got an iron will. She's the girl who lost an enormous about of weight and reinvented herself when she needed to.

I think that kind of determination is what she brings out to win. She's an inspiration.

  7. Jennifer - Women have only themselves to blame for lack of interest in women's sports. If women supported women's sports the way men support men's sports, they would get the coverage. You can't really blame the networks for not covering the LPGA if women don't watch.

  8. The thing I like about Cristie Kerr is that she can be glamorous and sophisticated or intense and athletic. Both styles suit her. I would like to see more of her in the golf press.

  10. I don't care what kind of eye candy they bring in. Women's golf is always going to be boring.

  11. The girl knows how to win on and off the course. We need more of her.
