Golf Mysteries-The Oobgolf Gift Bag & Cassie Burdette

Oobgolf Mystery Bags

Everyone likes a good mystery, right? And when golf is involved...well, that just makes it better.

My friends over at Oobgolf, have a golf gift mystery in the making for the upcoming holidays, and it's... in the bag... one might say.

They're offering $10.00 Mystery Bags, The mystery being that you don't know exactly what each bag will contain. It's all golf merchandise... that's one clue... and worth at least $10.00. But some of the bags will contain hundreds of dollars worth of gear! ...Equipment, and accessories... gadgets and apparel. The mystery deepens. If you savor suspense this kind of golf shopping is for you. It's also a great way to support the Oobgolf guys and their tireless quest to help you max your game with exclusive platforms for score tracking, course finding and equipment evaluation. Sites that encourage and empower golfers will help our sport survive in the crazy current economic environment, which is what we need to do. There's no mystery to that.

Golf Lover's Mysteries

On a totally different but equally enigmatic note, you're going to want to meet Cassandra Burdette. Cassie is a golfer and a sleuth who solves myriad golf mysteries, in a series by CT author Roberta Islieb.

And Ms. Islieb knows from whence she writes; she's a clinical psychologist and a recreational golfer. She's also one of the New England Sisters in Crime, a regional association for female mystery writers. In her golf mysteries, heroine Cassie solves crimes while battling her way through Q-School (Six Strokes Under) working as a touring pro (Putt to Death) and at LPGA tournaments (A Buried Lie). Fairway to Heaven and Final Fore are two other titles in the series, and I'm looking forward to reading them all.

The books can be ordered from your favorite independent bookseller, independent mystery bookseller, or online at Amazon. You may call R.J. Julia Booksellers (one of my favorite places in the world, BTW) in Madison CT for signed copies: 203-245-3959.

The really great thing is this: golf-centric as these mysteries are, non-golfers, male and female, can enjoy them too, for their intelligent, engaging plot lines and quirky, complex characters. I can't think of a better way to while away a non-golfable winter afternoon than in front of the fire with a good book. Again, in this unfriendly economy, it's one more way to talk about golf, and propagate interest in the game we love.

  1. I read one of the Cassie stories over the summer (Putt to Death) and I loved it. Just ordered two more and I can't wait to read them. ;O)

  2. You're so right when you raise concerns about golf and how it's going to survive this unprecedented economic crisis. The more we can all be cheerleaders for the sport the better because I see the next two or three years as being a major struggle for everyone involved.

  3. Patricia, I just read a golf mystery that I really enjoyed. It's Sudden Death, by Michael Balkind. It take place at the Masters and the protagonist is PGA golfer with lots of enemies. Lot's of suspense and great descriptions. A really good read.

  4. FINALLY ! Someone hard at work to solve the golf crimes in the world. Maybe she can find out who stole Ian Poulter's driver and sent him packing to mummy. OR - maybe she can use her powers of investigation to figure out why Michelle Wie is such a bubble headed, serial rules violator !! :-) Sounds like some fun reading.

  5. How many times do I have to say it, 'I have Ian's driver!' All I ask is a quick interview. Since he's offering money now, I might take the cash AND an interview. ;)

Patricia, thanks for the reminder about the golf mystery books. I read about them ages ago in GOLF for Women magazine and meant to pick them up. A definite boost for wintery nights.

  6. I am so all over this! What fun!

Also, cannot wait to read the golf mysteries! Yay! Finally someone considers all the crazy golfers of this world...

Honestly, during hard times, the real survivors go golfing and do little else. That's what we'll be doing rather than taking big trips.

I actually have a golf post up today so come read, if you haven't already done so.

  7. I've owned used bookstores for the past 15 years, but I'm not familiar with this series. It must be fairly recent. I hired someone else to manage my business a few years ago.

Mystery readers are fiercely loyal to their favorite authors and series. I've overheard Sue Grafton fans talking about what she will do when she reaches the end of the alphabet. "S is for Silence" and "T is for Trespass" were separated by 24 months, so perhaps Grafton is trying to postpone the retirement of Kinsey Milhone.
