Breakthrough Weekend for Not-So-Young Guns

Robert Rock's first career win was nine years coming, while Harrison Frazar clinched his maiden professional victory after 355 starts.

At 34 and 39 respectively, this weekend's winners... on the European Tour and the US PGA Tour respectively... clearly aren't what we've come to know as "Young Guns".

The word "finally"... followed in at least one case by an exclamation point... figured prominently in coverage of both tours today, and as exciting as it is to watch implausibly young players push boundries and break records, it's another kind of awesome to witness a long awaited breakthrough win.  This week golf got two.

  1. Patricia,

It was exciting to watch how Harrison Frazar at 40 years old next month to win his first PGA TOUR title by beating Robert Karlsson with a par on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

I always like to pull for the underdog which I believe Harrison Frazar was this weekend since he has never won a PGA Event in his career.

  2. It is a great story. I really like Robert Karlsson but you've gotta love a story like Frazar's. He nearly gave up the game on a couple of occasions!

  3. And across the pond Rock wins after 10 years! I'm 37 and it definitely inspires my goal of breaking 80 one of these days, hopefully by the end of the summer.

  4. Mr. Karlsson lives in the hood (Charlotte) so I was pulling for him. I'm hoping he'll use his experience in Memphis for a win the Open.
