Guys, It's Time to Learn from the Golf Girls
Sometimes, a guy is his own worst enemy.
I'm generalizing of course but ...in general... there's something about the way guys go about things that often tends to be self defeating. And just like certain behavior traits (conscientiousness, empathy, the desire to nuture) are overwhelmingly associated with women, there's a whole different set (agressivity, physicality, the desire to take risks) that's primarily pegged to males.
When it comes to golf do these so called "gender-related traits" come into play? Indian golf journalist, Rishi Narain, writng in the Economic Times speculates that they might.
And if he's right, Golf Guys should have their eyes on Mexico this weekend.

Maybe some truth to it but I'd still rather watch the PGA.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I dunno...I've seen some lovely ladies get rather *ahem* frustrated and aggressive on the course
ReplyDeleteMuch of the joy I get from playing is from taking the risky shots. Yes, they often find the water or the sand but the thrill when they're good is what makes the game for me.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's very amusing. My boyfriend plays so much better than I do but never wins by much because he's always doing crazy stuff. He can resist. That's a male trait I think.
ReplyDeleteJust watched Tiger in action at Arnie,. No desire to watch LPGA after that, We guys are always going to want to be Tiger.
ReplyDeletehmmm...interesting article,but i need to find a boyfriend...
ReplyDeleteUmmm - just WHY would a professional golfer want to be "nurturing" and "empathetic" during a tournament ??
ReplyDeleteThis is not a hug fest - it is a PROFESSIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT. The idea is to beat the other guys into submission and collect the biggest check.
I have long been a proponent of men watching the women's game - but not for these silly reasons. Most men can learn more about course management watching the LPGA than watching Phil Mickelnuts lose balls in the water on Sunday.
However, if you want to watch golf played at the highest level, you have to watch the men. The short games are superior, and no woman on the planet can lash a drive that carries 300+ yards over 100' tall trees to carry a dogleg.
Guys who write articles like this are doing one thing - sucking up to women.
What I've heard pros say is that most amateurs have an exaggerated view of their abilities. I think that's definitely true, and probably applies more to men.
ReplyDeleteI was just talking to my dad yesterday and he was commenting on some guy who said he hit his drives 260. Then my dad (who's 80) played with him. The guy didn't hit it past my dad! (225 yards) Whether you're a guy or a gal, you need to be smart about taking risks. And also remember it's just a game, too.
Patricia, speaking of risk-taking, I ask you, is the LPGA YouTube Channel
ReplyDeletea. too much risk with little reward
b. a rewarding project undermined by unwillingness to take a few risks
c. a snark hazard waiting to happen
d. all of the above
