Golf for Women to Close - Current Issue will be the Last

It was announced a couple of hours ago.

The current issue of Golf for Women magazine...the delightful, fashion-filled style issue...will be the last to hit the stands,

It's a big loss for all those of us who loved perusing the shiny pages of this uniquely female-friendly golf magazine. Golf for Women had a loyal readership and will be sorely missed by those who have looked forward to it's bimonthly arrival for the past 20 years.

As many readers of this blog know it can be a real challenge to find golf stories, news, tips and profiles written with women in mind, and now it seems, we'll need to be all the more resourceful.

Golf for Women editor Susan Reed, has been appointed editor-in-chief of Oprah's magazine O. She's an amazing editor and an extraordinary journalist...and I'm hoping she'll bring a bit of golf to Oprah's world.

  1. That's too bad I have lots of women friends who loved that magazine. Quite a few guys read it too because it was entertaining not boring like other golf magazines.

I think you have to start writing twice as much now :)

  2. In business there is a reason for everything and then the REAL reason most of us will never know.
This is a real hit to Women Golfers since this publications did provide for a well round view of what golf offers women.
Hopefully there will be something else that will fill this void quickly. Let me know how I can help.

  4. This is not good news at all. What are the future plans for all involved? Any ideas?

  5. Well this stinks. I like this magazine. It's the only golf magazie I read because it's the only one I can understand. I finally know enough about golf to get something out of the articles. I'm so disappointed.

  6. WHAT ?? They can't close the doors without a cover of GG and Golf Chick !!

bummer about the closing - GFW was an excellent publication.

  7. I always thought Golf Girl's Diary was much better than Golf for Women anyway :>

  8. Yes it's too bad. This should be a kind of wake up call though.

Everyone who loves golf should be committed to growing the game. Because without a growing base of recreational golfers and fans, in addition to serious golfers and pros, publications and golf product manufacturers will be shutting down in droves.

  9. Everyone should be committed to growing the game ? It's a nice sentiment. As tough as it is, with any "fad" there is a point where things have to slow down and slim down. In this case, Tiger Woods is the tip of the most recent golf "fad". A lot of people got caught up in the excitement and decided to take up the game, only to find out that it takes a good bit of work to be decent, and a round of golf can take half a day on a crowded course, and a less crowded course will cost a bunch of money. It had to slow down sooner or later.

Like Mr B said - a new generation of chick golf mag will pop up to take its place.

  11. This is sad. Maybe we can have a publication for everyone now? How about the other golf publications catering more content for women? I know that certain manufacturers and others realize that women are under-served in golf in many ways and are working to change that. I've heard this at events and demo days recently.

  12. WTF?! I just signed up a few weeks ago and subscribed to the damned magazine! They better give me a refund for I haven't even received this last issue, let alone ANY issue. This really pisses me off. I hate fucking Oprah, always have, but even more so now. And that Susan Reed, she's a sell out.OOOOH I'm hot about this.

  13. Patricia,
what does this mean for you and your blog on Golf for Women? Will they still keep the site online, even though the publication will no longer be published?

I agree that its people like ourselves(passionate and recreational golfers) that help this industry thrive.

  14. And they'd better be changing their website real soon to delete all the "subscribe now" links.

  15. Starting and sustaining a traditional newsstand/subscription magazine in this day and age, particularly in a narrow niche like women's golf is so difficult as to be nearly impossible. The increasing cost of essential raw materials required to make a magazine, such as wood, chemicals and such, combined with the exodus of youner readers to on-line media make it unrealistic that a new golf magazine for women could ever be viable.

  16. @c.a.marks - I'm sure CondeNast will make thing right with subscribers. I'll see what I can find out...and I WILL keep you posted.

  17. Well, I have been reading Golf Girl's Diary for a while now and this just means that now Golf Girl's Diary is my one and only NEW golf for women resource. Go Patricia! You Rock.

  19. Too bad to hear about the demise of Golf for Women. The editor certainly seems to have landed on her feet at O, however! Quite a step up in circulation terms, anyway! You'll have to keep the flag flying, Patricia, and maybe do something for the LPGA.com site?
