Golf Club Gone Wild: Bars Merge & Sexes Mingle

It's taken a while - 116 years to be exact - but Harborne Golf Club has finally joined he 21st century.

Responding to a changing world, and stormy economic conditions, the historic golf club located just south of Birmingham, UK has made some big changes.

  1. I think the comment has to be: Wakey wakey golf clubs! Whatever planet were they on? I used to lecture marketing to golf clubs and they were all so dead against using the club for other purposes and they all thought I was barking mad! Even suggested that they held an open-air concert on the practice ground in the summer(hardly anyone uses them in the UK) and they thought I'd completely lost it...then, I arrive in Dubai to find a Celine Dion concert being held on the driving range at the Four Seasons Golf Club....how fab is that? (if you like Celine Dion, that is....!). These golf establishments in the UK (especially Members clubs as opposed to Private clubs) really do have to wake up to reality.... most are living in the dark ages, still!

  2. I think it's damn well time the rules are changed.

They still have the traditional 19th Hole at our club, but year before last, when they closed the tennis courts & became strictly a golf club, our group (The Desert Duffers) took over the tennis pavillion and club house, so that we could co-mingle with our spouses after golf. They even bring us drinks from the main club house. You'd think they would get the hint...

That said, I do think a lot of things are going to be changing because we're a generation of golfers who like to golf with our spouses & don't need or want separation. That kind of thinking is so archaic. So, Kudos to Harborne Golf Club!

  3. Ah, jolly olde England.... Well, say what you want about the South, but here in Birmingham, Alabama we don't discriminate at the 19th hole. I am damn proud to be a trendsetter....

  4. Here you go again - it's ok for women to demand their own rooms - but if men have their own space, here comes trouble !! ;-)

Personally, I don't care if a club has a men's only and a women's only area, a lot of clubs have areas set up in the locker rooms - but these days, men and women and families WANT to mingle at their club - and if the club doesn't allow that - people will go somewhere else and take their membership with them.

What DOES bother me is government trying to force private businesses and clubs to do one thing or another...but not both sides of the street. Sorry ladies - but if you are going to force a men's club to open the doors to you - you have to open the doors to men at the local "Curves" (or whatever women's only health club is in your area) - and all other women only organizations. This was the hypocrisy of Martha Burke and her army of women's clubs - most of them were gender exclusive, but the media let that little detail slide.

I still get a kick out of people who say or write "finally joined the 21st century"....ummm...we're only 9 years into the 21st century.

  5. I wouldn't be a member of a club that wouldn't let women in the bar.

  6. We Boomers have seen a lot of changes in the course of our lives, haven't we? And yet relics such as men-only bars still exist.

It amazes me that the world still contains such weak little men who can be threatened by the mere presence of women. Just amazes me. One would think that natural selection would have eliminated their genes long ago. Who are the women who choose to mate with such insecure little rodents?

  7. "Weak little men" ??? Again - I point out that women demand places of their own - AND demand entry into all places men go to be with other men.

Professional athletes can't even shower and get dressed without women in the locker rooms - but requests for men in the women's locker room were met with screams of "PERVERT !"

Which way will it be, JB ?
