Only Two Things - Live from the Jersey Shore

As we always do on "Only Two Things", tonight at 9:30PM ET, we'll be talking Golf and Sex, but this week I'll be broadcasting from Atlantic City, New Jersey where I'm spending a few days at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Our provocative topic suggested by Brenda from Bryn Mawr, PA: "Are golfer's more likely than non-golfers to be unfaithful?"

In her email Brenda explained that the thought occurred to her when she found out that two of the men in her husband's Sunday foursome had been cheating on their wives. When the respective wives found out the first thing they blamed was golf. So that's what we'll discuss. Is there any truth to Brenda's supposition? Weigh in, why don't you?

  1. Some men cheat. Period. Golf has nothing to do with it.

If anything, I would think playing golf would give them less time to cheat. But any guy who wants to cheat will find a way.

I do think that when you spend four hours with someone on a regular basis you get to know them pretty well. It's possible that these guys know more about each other because they golf.

But blaming golf for infidelity is absurd IMHO. Blaming the individuals who cheat makes more sense to me.

  2. "Are golfer's more likely than non-golfers to be unfaithful?" Brenda

    ABSOLUTELY !

motive and opportunity - that's what ALL cheaters need and golfer's certainly have plenty of free time in a social setting (opportunity) and, well, we all have the motive but i would say golfer's are living longer and have physically healthier lives

The Villages “Florida’s Friendliest Hometown” OR Sin City ?

"Though The Villages — which spans three counties with 40,000 homes and more than 70,000 residents — boasts 34 golf courses, nine country clubs, two downtown squares and a slew of restaurants and bars, getting lucky is one of the residents' primary pastimes.

The huge complex began growing rapidly in the mid-1990s, and reported cases of gonorrhea rocketed from 152 to 245, of syphilis rose from 17 to 33, and of chlamydia from 52 to 115 among those 55 and older in Florida from 1995 to 2005.

The state's sexually transmitted disease rate among those over 65 is one of the fastest growing in the country, one report claims.

In 2006, a local gynecologist reported that she treated more cases of herpes and human papillomavirus at The Villages than she did when she worked in Miami."...... SMA' TALK WI'T

i hope i gave proper credit to the source of the above quotation but IMHO that says it all in answer to Brenda's inquiry

  3. The linking of "The Villages", sexually transitted diseases, and golf makes little sense. A casual reader might come away with the impression that the excerpt makes a compelling case. However, it merely jumbles together some disparate statistics and ties them together with several leaps in logic.

I tend to agree with Heather. A real golfer does not have room for two mistresses. Golf demands too much time.

Of course, claiming one is a golfer does allow for lots of time away from the home. Undoubtedly some cheaters hide behind the sport to steal some time away from their spouse. However that is not a case of golf leading to infidelity.

  4. .

i'll be the first to offer there are lies, damned lies and statistics

but knowing the villages community as i do i can attest these data support an "active" lifestyle predominantly led by GOLFERS

the villages was originally sold and continues to be supported by both arnold palmer and nancy lopez
