This week the stylish Japanese teenager is playing in the Diamond Cup... an annual tournament on the JGT... where he took an early lead and created quite a bit of buzz among followers of fairway fashion.
You see, there's something a bit different about the way Mr. Ishikawa is accessorizing these days, and it has everything to do with his headwear.
It's different... but familiar. The slightly oversized cap, with a flat bill and a touch of hip-hop styling... Ryo is clearly channeling Rickie Fowler with this look and Japan's golf fashion scribes are loving it.

ReplyDeletegolf headwear has had a long and varied history, with the exception of the most recent period of baseball caps
it must be the format demanded by advertisers
the more financially secured old timers do wear the more stylish panama straw hats, and tams, and kango fedoras and even the bucket hat - very few, if any, baseball caps on the seniors - maybe they don't need the marketing money paid to wear forehead billboards
i couldn't imagine sammy snead or ben hogan in a baseball cap3

It's funny I hadn't thought about that but it's true baseball caps are standard now but they don't go too far back. I like the style Rickie and now Ryo wear... on THEM. Very few others could wear it well.
ReplyDeleteI can't say I've seen that style on the golf course but MAN... at the mall today it seemed like ever guy between ten and twenty was wearing a flatbill cap.

ReplyDeleteThe two kids are a lot alike. They both have a fierce young modern look but an old fashioned, respectful personality. That's part of why they're both so popular here in Japan.

ReplyDeleteLong before Ricky Fowler was wearing this style Puma had both Johan Edfors and Anna Nordqvist wearing it. With the Puma logo it looks great.
