Men's Golf Fashion - The Fuller Cleveland?

.

Last year at this time it seemed the latest revival of the Full Cleveland had finally played itself out.

After two seasons of near ubiquity, many assumed it was headed back into hibernation for a decade or so, as it's done a number of times in the past.

Apparently however, that assumption was misguided as recent tournaments have yielded several sightings of the sartorial misdeed.

Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell were both rocking the look at Doral last week... perhaps emboldened by Rory Mcilroy's rendition at Honda earlier in the month... or Lee Westwood's at the same event.  That's four of the world's top ten right there, and though I don't foresee a full Cleveland-clad Martin Kaymer anytime in the near future, it wouldn't surprise me to see plenty of white belts worn with plenty of white shoes at PGA events this summer.  And these days, as fellow golf blogger courtgolf astutely pointed out, the look can be taken to the next level by adding a striking white driver and/or a pure white putter.

Court, who writes over at Waggleroom, and regularly comments on timely topics at a number of other golf blogs, generally concentrates on more "weighty" issues,  however he's also a keen... and often bemused... observer of fairway fashion.  In a quick tweet yesterday, he asked me:
What's the next level after "Full Cleveland" ? If a guy also has a white driver...is there something after Cleveland ?
I thought it was a legitimate question... and I think it needs a name. Any suggestions anyone? The sooner the better, I'm have a feeling we'll be needing it for Ian Poulter at the Masters in a couple of weeks.

Cleveland HiBore XL Driver Rocks (*updated)

...I played with my EWGA league at Vail's Grove last night and everyone was in awe of it. My drives were so consistently straight and long, that by the end of our nine holes there was mass driver lust going on. I don't normally inspire lust on the golf course. Not for my golf game anyway.

It seems the HiBore has a sweet spot that perfectly lines up with the center of gravity. At least that's the explanation in ClevelandSpeak, and supposedly that makes it very forgiving. Yes, it was definitely forgiving me last night.

Venerable golf blog, The Sand Trap, posted an excellent review of the men's version last year. I'm going to play with mine a bit more and write a full review from a lady's perspective. Who knows I might change my mind about it over time. Don't think so though, in fact, I can't wait to wrap my hands around it again. MmmHmm.

* Update - Check out today's post from Sean over at the The Deep Rough. It seems there's some indication that "...a limited number of Men's HiBORE XL 10.5 degree drivers may not conform to the Characteristic Time test standard established by the USGA." The good news is that my W-Series HiBORE XL, has been tested and determined to conform to USGA standards. I still say it has magical powers though.

Note from Golf Girl:
Admittedly, I have a ways to go in the quality dept. I hope to be able to get beyond the built in camera mic soon, as my sound is really in need of improvement. Lighting too... I've got to work on that. A better tripod, a more robust movie editor, a camera man (person)...all things I need to aquire eventually. In the meantime, I'm enjoying do what I can do with what I've got. Hope you enjoy watching.

Abu Dhabi Championship: A Win for Global Golf

.

Earlier this weekend, respected golf commentator Renton Laidlaw, gave accolades to Abu Dhabi, and declared that it "deserves its mantle as one of the world’s most exciting, emerging golf centers of excellence".

Having covered golf internationally for decades and won golf writing's most prestigious awards, Mr. Laidlaw is clearly in a good position to judge... and it doesn't seem he'd get an argument from any of the golfers... or golf fans... who congregated at Abu Dhabi Golf Club during the past week to contest the first stop in the European Tour's "Desert Swing".

The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship featured an international cast of the world's best. An amazing seventeen different nationalities were represented within the top twenty on today's final leaderboard. It was a group that included at least one player from every continent except... Antarctica!

"Global Golf" has become a trending term lately. ~ Y.E. Yang's win at the 2009 PGA Championship and the designation of the HSBC Champions event in China as a World Golf Championship... along with golf's Olympic re-inclusion... have perpetuated major global golf buzz of late.

Though there was some resentment expressed towards Anthony Kim and other PGA Tour players who have chosen to play European Tour events such as the Abu Dhabi Championship over conflicting PGA Tour events like the struggling Bob Hope Classic, many agree that the future of golf, will depend - to a great extent - on its growth in emerging markets, and with local golfers playing in the Abu Dhabi Championship for the first time, there's reason to believe that a less insular focus may be the best way to achieve that growth. In any case, taking into consideration the above-mentioned events, the sport's global reach seems well positioned to grow.

And now for a couple of my own somewhat impertinent astute observations on the Abu Dhabi Championship:

The prize for the most remarkable golf outfit goes... not surprisingly... to Ian Poulter for the turquoise on turquoise ensemble he wore on day three. The dapper Englishman put up a valiant fight and finished one back in second place.

Simon Dyson gets an honorable mention for Maroon Monochromatics and Best Use of the Full Cleveland. He posed quite fetchingly in this outfit at the driving range before the second round.

Juan, a reader from Spain, brought Camillo Villegas and his boldly patterned golf shirt to my attention. Mr. Villegas finished the tournament in a tie for 19th and gets extra points for massive muscles... and because he always indulges the fans with the Spiderman move.

Several readers asked me about the galloping horses behind Martin Kaymer in my previous post. Here they are behind T-13, Sergio Garcia. There were a number of such oversized images set up on the course and they made for some interesting and dynamic photos.

The prize for Best Smile While Hitting a Sand Shot has to go to Edoardo Molinari. He was also part of the six-way tie for 13th.

Representing the USA in the top 20 was Anthony Kim. Yet another of the T-13s, Mr. Kim may have been paying homage to his beleaguered pal Tiger Woods, with a red shirt on Sunday.

Amazing and awesome Shane Lowery climbed into the top 100 following his excellent fourth place finish... while reinforcing the myth of the portly golfer. BTW, portly = cute in my book, at least where Shane's concerned.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy reinforced his reputation as the "Young Gun to Watch" by finishing in third place, and has evidently gone back to the Ronald McDonald hairstyle he temporarily abandoned in the second half of 2009.

...and finally, these guys won the prize for Cutest Club Covers at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Championship. Do you know who they belong to?

Orange you glad Se Ri is so talented
- Not only is Se Ri Pak a golf icon, she's also got a golf clothing company... and her line is designed by her sister. It'll be available in the US this fall.

Yani Tseng rocks the full Cleveland

SBS Championship: Of Oral Fixations & Full Clevelands

A couple of quick observations going into the second round:

1) Guys are putting some inappropriate things in their mouths. Let's hope gorgeous Kapalua Golf Course is as organic as its pineapples, or Stephen Ames and Brian Gay may soon have tummy aches.

2) Things are not looking good for those who hoped the Full Cleveland was a one-season-wonder. It's definitely back for 2010... at least according to style icons Dustin Johnson and Nick Watney.

3) Y.E. Yang looks great in Greenwich Green as does Stewart Cink in purple. Or maybe I just like bright colors.

My fantasy team Golf Girl's Guys, got off to a pretty good start and it's snowing again in CT, so I'm looking forward to a couple of awesome evenings in front of the fire watching the SBS Championship.

Traveling Golf Girl Brings Along Her Fave Five

.

I'm about to head off to a reputedly beautiful golf course on the island of Crete.

There's nothing like golf travel to open ones eyes to the myriad possibilities this game holds.

Variations in topography and climate, as well as local and exotic vegetation, create distinct experiences from place to place, and require you to adapt your game...sometimes even your entire strategy. Add to that the fact that you may be playing with a dubious and unfamiliar set of rental clubs, and the challenges are amplified.

For this particular trip we debated long and hard about bringing our golf clubs. Not only were we encountering draconian baggage restrictions on Delta Airlines, but we were already carrying many pairs of obscure and expensive designer jeans for Greek friends who seem to be obsessed appreciate such things. And jeans, designer or not, are heavy.

My solution was to take one golf bag for both Nick and I, and each bring five clubs. That would keep the number of bags - and the weight - down. It was then that I asked the golfers on Twitter and at the Business Golf Country Club which clubs they'd choose if they had to play with only five for an entire summer. I posed the question that way because I wanted to determine which clubs they were actually most attached to day-to-day. I automatically included my putter, which I have an unhealthy attachment to and my amazing Sweet Spot driver, so it was the other three items I was interested in knowing about... and I got lots of replies (thanks so much to the repliers).

Though there were many variations, basically, the theme was this: 1 hybrid, 1 iron, 1 wedge. Duh, right? In the majority of cases, it was 3H, 7I + 56*/60* wedge. Which is what I went with in the end.

And here's the thing... I feel like I'm playing better here - with just my five clubs - than I play in CT with my full set. And the courses definitely haven't been easier. OK, yes... I have missed a couple of shots that I might I'm convinced I could have made had I had "the right clubs." But basically, I feel like the pared down set has removed some of the distraction that comes with a myriad of choices. After all, I'm a recreational golfer who's been playing for three seasons, and just broke 100 a month ago.

I packed my Sweet Spot 3H which is currently my favorite club. It's 19* of multi-faceted, playing perfection, and it's one of three Sweet Spot hybrids I play with regularly. They're all stellar and uber-stylish. With it's pink on black stripes. It's inspired some major club-lust here, and on my next trip I have a feeling I'll be over Sweet Spot golf clubs instead of designer jeans. My 7I is far more basic, as 7Is should be. It's a no-nonsense relic from my first days of golf and the Ram set I got for $80 at Target. Finally there's my Cleveland 56* CG11 wedge, which is what I feel most comfortable with around the greens, in the traps and - to be honest - on any shorter shot. It just works for me. Oh BTW, with room for only one pair of golf shoes I chose my PUMA black & whites. A good choice.

So there you have it. My solution to the golf vs. baggage restriction issue, a dilema golfers will probably encounter more and more frequently as airlines attempt to trim costs. And yes, of course Nick has been blaming his every mishit and each of his blatant miscalculations on a missing club that would have been perfect for that shot.

But you wouldn't do that, would you?

Phil Mickelson's End-of-Season Style Statement

No matter what you think of the one affectionately known as FIGJAM, there's no denying he finished the season with a flourish.

In doing so he undoubtedly lightened the hearts of PGA honchos... and (temporarily) muted even the most vocal Fedex Cup critics. But few remarked on the subtle changes to Mr. Mickelson's look that added to the impact of his dramatic comeback.

A few of the elements that contributed to Mr. Mickelson's improved aesthetic are pictured above as follows (l to r):

A leaner waistline : This allowed for the wearing of a close-to-the-body, eurostyle shirt without the ridicule that ensued earlier in the season. The choice of a traditional dark belt (after his daring dalliance with The Full Cleveland proved disastrous) demonstrates Mickelson's return to restraint. Or possibly a final warning from fashion police.

The surprising shiny trousers : You may not have noticed, but Phil's trousers yesterday had a distinct and delightful sheen to them. It was subtle, hence way under-reported. In fact, kudos to the awesome new apparel blog, Chapeau Noir for highlighting... and celebrating... this playful departure from the traditional.

The astonishing absence of
Moobs : Mr. Mickelson's pecs were nearly impeccable yesterday, undoubtedly another happy result of his leaner physique. For a guy who made runner-up on the Best Moobs in Sports list and once earned the nickname Moobs Mickelson, this is an impressive transformation, and if maintained will allow Phil to wear the edgier, body-hugging shirts that define today's buff and stylish professional golfers.

So, professionally... and stylistically... the golf season ended on the up for Phil, and as many of the golf scribes noted, that gives us something sweet to look forward to in 2010.
