Phil Bundy - Golf is About the People who Play It

The future belongs to those who see the beauty of their dreams.

Eleanor Roosevelt said that... and it's one of my favorite quotes.

I thought of it last week as I was strolling dashing through the vast Orange County Convention Center during my one day visit to the PGA Merchandise Show. Passing booth after booth of innovative, awesome, and occasionally puzzling golf products, I was amazed at how many small companies there were, bravely competing with the industry giants. They were in every category - from equipment to apparel - offering colorful and creative alternatives to the more ubiquitous offerings of the mass marketers.

I'll be covering many of these smaller companies over the next several weeks because so many of them are creating awesome products... and because many have fascinating stories about following their dreams in a decidedly perilous business environment.

And speaking of dreams, I met Phil Bundy at the show. If you haven't heard of Phil yet, you most likely will in the near future. He's got a dream, inspired by his 5 year old son Charlie; at age 43, Phil's on a quest to join the PGA tour! I know...that's one lofty dream... but I think Phil has the tenacity and talent to achieve it. He's chronicling his efforts on his own website, and has been covered by a number of high profile golf blogs, including Waggle Room and Golf Views. His story has gone international as well, with coverage on one of Spain's top golf blogs, Fuera de límites.

I've known Phil for several months now through the social networks, and it was great to actually meet him. He's definitely a man dreaming big...and working like heck in pursuit of his dream. In addition, like many business owners I met in Orlando, he's generous with his time and ready to help others with the pursuit of their dreams.

Eleanor would be proud.

  1. I guess all of us loves Phill Bundy´s quest, because we would like to have the talent that he has to play golf, and his comitment to achive it.
Phil is a great guy, no doubt about it. He is a serious golfer and he has a great team aroud him.
I love the way that he has chosen to go for the PGA tour, telling us all the steps...No doubt, that we are with Phil Bundy
No matter what happens in his quest, if it goes one way o the other, he has won a lot of friends in his way and a lot of proud for him and his family.
    Go PHILL!!!!!

  2. I've been a little down on "Phils" lately. First Phil Mickelson, then Punxsutawney Phil. Here's a Phil I can believe in and support.

GO PHIL! (and be sure to write it all down and take great photos)

  3. I know three guys who share the same dream as Phil. To play on the PGA Tour. Each is in his 20s and play astoundingly well, but none of them want it as much as Phil does and as good as they are I see Phil's chances as being much better.

    Wishing the best of luck!!!

  5. I son dreams of becoming the next Anthony Kim but doesn't quite understand how hard that is. I'm going to try to get him to wait till he's Phil's age. :o)

  6. Better to take the shot and not wonder the rest of your life if you made a mistake by missing on the sidelines.

If a young man (or woman) has the game, and wants to give it a shot, life is not so short that s/he shouldn't try. One never knows.

  7. The term "Rules" can be said to include the following:

    * Decisions on the Rules of Golf, a book published every 2 years by the USGA and R&A to

clarify questions and queries raised by the Rules.
    * Local rules set by the Committee of a golf club, for example to denote the method used to

define the boundaries of the course, ball drops, environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs), etc.
    * Rules of golf etiquette, covered by the main book, define the proper behaviour of those

    playing the game.
    * Rules often adopted in competitions, for example the prohibition on using automotive

transportation during a round and Rules related to Temporary Immovable Obstructions (TIOs).
    * Rules governing the size, shape and performance of golf equipment (clubs and balls) as

defined by the R&A/USGA (Appendices I and II).
    * Rules governing golfers with disabilities who play in accordance with A Modification of the

Rules of Golf for Golfers with Disabilities as published by the R&A and USGA.
