But he missed the cuts at the first three majors and kind of fell off our collective radar for a little while. Last week, at Firestone Country Club, interest in Alvaro was reignited with his second round, bogey-free, 5-under-par 65, not to mention a little exhibition he put on with a a 1954 MacGregor Tourney M85 persimmon driver (Ryan Ballengee, eat your heart out).
If there was any lingering doubt about the sexy Spaniard and his off-the-chart spectacular-ness, it was knocked with his performance on the 11th hole par 5 in first round of the PGA Championship Hazeltine yesterday when he stunned Tiger Woods & Padraig Harrington with a second shot... hit with his driver... that rolled onto the green while they were still in the process of putting.
Tiger called the performance "stupid long" and "phenomenal" and as rich Rich Beem, who won the 2002 PGA Championship, and was paired with the dueling leaders, explained “We were like holy S#!T. Just unbelievable." The self-effacing Sr. Quiros tends to explain the secret to his powerful swing in simple terms, like; "I'm tall and I have long arms." He finished round one in a tie for third.
So let's parse this out... Alvaro Quiros is a 26 year old golfer who is impressing the sport's best, he's ultra-nice as well as exceptionally attractive and when he's in the US, he's ...lonely??? "...outside (the course), I'm too alone, which is a difficult situation to manage." OK... I'm certainly not alone in my desire to help this young man out but I'm way over in CT, perhaps there's someone in the Land of 10,000 Lakes who'd like to step up to the plate?

ReplyDeleteThis same thing happened to Miguel Angel Jimenez when he tried to play at PGA Tour...In Europe most players are used to travel together, sharerooms...because it is what the have done since they where kids and they played international tournaments thans to the Spanish Golf Federation.
ReplyDeleteMost of spanish players know each other since they were just boys that could play great golf, so to some of them, it is not so easy to just play golf...They would like to have dinner together, play cards....
I was about to board a plane for MN, but from what Ovidio says it seems he likes to hang out with the guys. I'm picturing Alvaro playing poker and smoking cigars in a man cave...Let me go buy that plane ticket. ;)

ReplyDeleteI was at the tournament this weekend and he is beyond adorable. A tall dark and handsome drink of water with a nice deep voice :) This gal from the land of 10,000 lakes would have gladly kept him company all weekend long!
